Career and spirituality are not two parallel paths that never meet. They are interconnected and by integrating the two together, one achieves true success. To quote something I'd read last year that was written by Dr. Vijai P. Sharma, PhD , "Your brain is just like your car. If the wheels on the left side of your car are in top condition, but the right side wheels are jammed, the car can't go very far. You need both sides of the wheels turning together for an efficient ride. Likewise, let the wheels of your mind, the right side as well as the left side, turn together so they can support each other."
A child who is learning to walk knows the pleasure of achievement. When it manages to take two steps without falling, it gurgles with joy. Work should be something that gives you pleasure and a sense of achievement. If you work just because you have to, and because it pays your bills, you will never do well in it.
We are going through an economic slow down. Millions of people have been laid off and many more will be before the situation gets any better. It is demoralizing for the person who has lost his job and it is trying times for his family. Every one quotes statistics and there are experts every where who talk of trends and the future. All that is fine but it does not help the person who is going through this crisis or his family. Every person is unique and has his or her own story. He or she is not a "trend" or a "statistic". Every person is unique and has a story, a set of responsibilities and a life. These are trying times, but it is not all that dark.
This is a time to take stock and improve one's life and also rectify career choices. Spirituality can help in finding the right career.
Every one is born with certain skills which are inherent to the person. As a child one simply knows what one likes to do and what one does not like. There are skills, talents, interests and hobbies that attract an individual. This psychic ability to recognize latent skills, or as it is known in spiritual parlance, knowledge the soul has gained in previous lives is intuitively known to us in our childhood. In an ideal world, our careers would be closely aligned to one's personality and skills. However, this is not an ideal world. As we grow up, we lose this psychic ability to recognise our own capabilities. We often end up working at jobs that gives no satisfaction.
This leads to unhappiness, stress and more often than not, since the heart isnot in the job, one does not do well. Sounds familiar? If this sounds familiar, ask yourself another question. Your job pays you, may be it gives you a great salary, but do you still feel unsatisfied? If this is the case, you are or were in the wrong job and it is time for a career change. In the right job you would not only feel happy, enthusiastic and it would also pay the bills and make use of your inherent talents. Career growth and excellence add quality to life. There is the perfect job, the ideal career suitable to your unique skills. It just requires some serious introspection to find what is just right for you.
Human personality is made up of all those skills, talents, interests & hobbies tucked away deep inside. Some people are quiet, hard workers, others are go-getters. Ask yourself certain key questions and answer honestly. This is really important because a career change has far reaching effect on your life and those of your family members.
1.Are you an extrovert? Do you like people and enjoy interacting with more than 20 new faces a day?
2.Would you like to spend your entire day in front of a computer screen, limiting your social interactions to the coffee break?
3.Are you great at visualizing grand projects but hate getting into details or are you the kind of person who has difficulty coming up with a new idea, but excel at reading the small print and carrying a project through?
4.Do you avoid unpleasantness and avoid arguments, or are you the kind who does not shy away from arguments and loves to state unpleasant facts forcefully, without sugar coating?
5.Do you live for today or do you love to foresee months, may be years ahead?
Answers to these questions will make you realize what your core strengths are. You may be happy as a team player and uncomfortable taking decisions. On the other hand, you might realize that you are happy leading a team but can not pay attention to small irritating details.
Once you gain this insight we come to the next important step.
A career has to contribute in your growth as an individual for it to be rewarding. To achieve true satisfaction and for it to be closely aligned to your own psychic abilities, it would be beneficial to get rid of limiting beliefs.
Again, ask yourself specific questions
1. Do I love my career or would I be rather doing something else?
2. Am I happy with my achievements?
3. What else do I want to achieve?
4. Do I really believe that I will be able to achieve it?
5. If I don't believe I can, why?
6. Do I believe money or success is scary, frightening or evil?
7. Where did I get this idea?
It is important to know that these are just your perceptions, a set of beliefs you have imbibed from family, school, playground, and neighborhood. They are not real and you can stop letting them affect you. Design your own affirmations and repeat them daily in your own mind. Once you change your own beliefs, you will definitely attract new career opportunities that will change your entire life.
