Using Meta Tags Effectively

Tips for Using Meta Tags to Market Your Website

Mary Hale
You created the perfect website to advertise your business and gain new customers, got it published, and running; ok so now how do you get those new customers to find your website among the millions of other sites that populate the internet today? That is where marketing your website comes into play, and meta tags are an easy and inexpensive marketing tool that you can use to draw visitors to both new and existing websites. A meta tag is basically a small piece of HTML code embedded in a website that helps to optimize search engine results. If you have the keyword that someone types into a search engine in one of your meta tags then your website will show in the search engine results.

Ok, so meta tags are useful and worth learning about, fine, but how do you go about using them to successfully market your website so that potential customers find it? Good question. The first thing to do is to think of all the possible search terms that someone might use to look for a website offering the services or information that your site offers. It might be helpful to make a list of them and ask friends and family members for suggestions on what they would use to search for a similar site. Once you have your list of keywords and search terms, sort through them and select the most popular or likely ones to embed into your site as meta tags.

The next thing to do would be to create a meta tag for your site. When deciding what to put in your meta tags it is a good idea to try to use as many key words as possible, thus raising the website's chances of showing up in a search engine results page. Write a very descriptive and concise statement of what your website is and what it offers to visitors. Use key words that potential customers would use to search for a similar business or website. This will help increase your site's chances of gaining new visitors.

Once you have created a meta tag that you are satisfied with, all you have to do is embed it into the HTML code for your website, being sure to embed it in each page of your site. You might also consider adding different meta tags for each page; that way you can use them to target search results to relevant pages on your site. this will help to increase the chances that visitors actually become customers instead of just one time visitors.

Considering the massive number of websites hosted on the internet today, and the large amounts of results that each individual search returns, it is important to make the most of all available marketing tools to ensure that you make the most of any website. Meta tags can help to do just that, are easy to use and create, and are also a very cost effective marketing tool because all they will actually cost you to use them is a little bit of time. In today's technological world, with a rather unsteady economy, it is more important than ever to make the most of these important marketing tools.
