In the fall and winter months, many of us become congested due to colds, flu and allergies. This congestion can block the openings in the sinus cavities and cause mucous to accumulate, which leads to sinus pressure. If this is left untreated, it can cause sinus headaches; and if the mucous becomes infected, it can multiply quickly and significantly increase the sinus pressure.
Thankfully, there is relief available in the Neti Pot! Using Neti Pot salt brings immense relief in a non-pharmaceutical form. While medications relieve the pain by temporarily stopping the flow of mucous, they do nothing to address the root of the problem. The Neti Pot gently washes away the mucous, and even allergens, providing you with the relief you seek. The Neti Pot has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine to sooth the sinuses and relieve sinus pressure, and has been used increasingly in western medicine as physicians discover its effectiveness.
To use, simply fill your Neti Pot with filtered water (the chlorine found in most tap water can irritate your sinuses) and pour in ΒΌ teaspoon of pure salt. The NasalFlo Neti Pot actually comes with pre-measured packets filled with a patented mixture of sodium chloride and sodium bicarbonate pH balanced specifically for your nasal passages. This is the brand of Neti Pot I own because I like the comfortable spout design and the fact that the salt is pre-measured.
Once the salt and water are mixed together in the Neti Pot, simply stand over the sink and tilt your head to the side and slightly forward. Begin to slowly pour the mixture from your Neti Pot into one nostril while breathing through your mouth. It's awkward at first, but as soon as the water starts flowing, it becomes easier. When you have emptied the Neti Pot, gently blow the excess water and mucous from your nose, and repeat for the second nostril.
When you're experiencing sinus pressure, you should use your Neti Pot between two and four times per day. You can also use your Neti Pot as a preventative measure by using it once every morning and every evening, keeping your sinuses clear and clean every day. This ancient remedy is as effective today as it was a thousand years ago, and it is easy to find at almost any drugstore, or online. Simply type "Neti Pot" into your Google search box and you'll find that your options are wide open.
