Using Oravet for Your Dog's Mouth

Dental care is extremely important in our pets and we all hate paying the price of dental because we didn't take care of the teeth properly. Most pet owners do not know how to clean their pet's teeth and as a result, they completely ignore the mouth until there is a problem or until they begin to smell bad breath. Some owners won't realize that there is a tooth problem until the tooth becomes infected and abscesses. The beginning of dental disease begins with tartar accumulation. Because animal saliva is more alkaline than our own, they tend to build up a hard shell around the tooth called "calculus". It is almost like cement around the tooth and once it accumulates on the tooth, it can be difficult to get rid of without a full anesthetized dental cleaning.

The calculus in its early stages will begin to creep under the gingival line and begin to irritate the gingiva. This is where gingivitis comes in. Due to the calculus creeping under the gingiva, the gums become irritated and inflammed. So how do you prevent the plaque from accumulating? There are numerous products that you can purchase to aid in dental disease prevention, whether you use them or not is up to you or whether you follow the advise of your veterinarian. Oravet is a great product in that it prevents tartar from accumulating on the tooth itself. Oravet is almost like melted candle wax, the difference is that it stays in that melted form at a thicker consistency allowing you to apply it to the teeth with no problem. So how is Oravet applied? First, you need determine if you will be able to apply the Oravet in your dog's mouth. Is your dog a fighter? Does he/she resist when you try and clean the mouth? This is probably not the best product for you to begin using then.

To apply the Oravet, you have to ensure that the tooth on which you are applying the Oravet is completely dry. If there is any moisture on the tooth whatsoever, the Oravet will slide right off. To dry the tooth, blot it with a Kleenex or gauze pad and apply the Oravet while the tooth is still dry. Once it has been applied, move on to the next tooth. The Oravet creates a slippery surface on the tooth, preventing plaque from accumulating. Plaque needs a rough surface to accumulate on, which is what a tooth normally is, rough surfaced (unless polished after a dental cleaning). You should speak with your veterinarian about application of Oravet and ask to have a demonstration of how to apply it to the teeth. It is very beneficial in the long run and will prevent dental disease if used in conjunction with other dental care products such as enzymatic toothpaste, etc.
