Buses in Sydney

Sydney has an extensive bus system with a free shuttle bus that circulates through Sydney central. Many of the city buses do not accept cash and a prepaid ticket need to be bought from vendors in town. The buses run frequently at peak hours and regularly during the day.

The Sydney Explorer bus is an air conditioned service that stops at 27 tourist attractions. Its partner, the Bondi Explorer stops at 19 attractions. Tickets allow the holder to jump on and off as they please and are valid for one or two days. It is an easy way to see the city and surrounds.

Trains in Sydney

Sydney has an extensive commuter train service that runs throughout the central city area and surrounding suburbs. Tickets can be bought from machines that operate 24 hours a day or from ticket offices.

The Monorail in Sydney

The monorail has an elevated track that winds through central Sydney. It is an excellent way to gain a new perspective on town and day tickets are available. The Monorail runs every 3 to 5 minutes and it takes 15 minutes to complete the circuit.

Ferries in Sydney

Sydney is built around a harbour and the Parramatta River and has an extensive ferry system that services waterfront areas. These include Taronga Zoo, Manly, Darling Harbour, Watson's Bay, Rose Bay, Double Bay, the North Shore, Balmain, Cockatoo Island, Sydney Olympic Park and Parramatta. Most ferries leave from Circular Quay which is close to Sydney Opera House. The ferries have operated for over 135 years and carry over 14 million passengers each year.

Water Taxis in Sydney

Water taxis are available and can transport passengers to specific locations and also offer guided tours of the waterways. They offer a more personalized service that some visitors may enjoy.

Multipass tickets are available that allow unlimited travel on the ferries, trains and buses. These cost $20 Australian dollars for a day or $57 for one week.

Sydney is a vast city but is easy to access through the excellent public transport network. Most areas are accessible by using a combination of ferry, train and bus and if using a day pass, the cost is negligible.
