Using Safari Browser on Your Mac? Better Not Use Paypal!

Lchaim
Michael Barrett, the chief information security officer for PayPal (a subsidiary of eBay) has said that Safari is missing two very important anti-phishing features that included in other browsers like Internet Explorer 7.0, Firefox 2.0, or Opera. Safari is the default browser for the Mac and iPhone.

PayPal has been a huge target for online fraud and many popular/mainstream browsers have built-in features to help prevent this. One such feature is a fairly new technology called EV (Extended Validation) certificates. Browsers supporting this feature will have the address bar turn green when the user has gone to a legitimate URL. Safari is also missing another critical feature which is an anti-phishing filter. This filter helps to warn users that they have possibly gotten to a phishing site or another web site which a questionable web site. to warn users when they are visiting suspicious websites, Barrett said.

Some detractors say that the Extended Validation certificates is not THAT big of a deal because many users are not yet aware of why the address turns different colors. A web site which is thought to be fraudulent will cause the address bar to be highlighted in red. A site which is questionable will cause the address bar to be highlighted in red. A genuine web site will be highlighted in a green address bar.

The two built in features of other browsers will not completely eliminate fraud but they will go a long way to help prevent some people from getting victimized.

Thats crazy! Exellent reporting Doc! : ) I use firefox home and IE at work. I prefer firefox out of them all though. IE used to always give me issues, and in some instances it would not work at all. What sucks about firefox though is that you have to download these add ons for certain media to work. I was new and had no clue wtf I needed to DL... as their tutorials were so brief and vague.

    Excell article Dave!
