Using Selection Tools Effectively in Photoshop

Carrie Lowe
Many people find as they begin using Photoshop that there are plenty of reasons why a good grasp of the selection tools is essential to getting the image to look exactly as they want. In order to really fine tune many images, it is important to know how to use the various selection tools which can allow you to quickly and easily select just the parts of the image that you want to work with, while leaving the rest of the image intact, or even deleting the rest of the image and only using the portion that you want to work with.

Some of the most common selection tools include the marquee tools, as well as the pen tool are some of the most effective options that you have when choosing parts of the image that you want to work with. It is important to spend a good amount of time working on mastering these tools so that you can carefully pick out the exact portions of the images that you want, while avoiding the rest of the image that you are not concerned with.

For most images, simply using a marquee tool is adequate, but for the ultra detailed aspects that you want to remove, it is important to look for the pen tool to become your best friend. The precision that the pen tool will allow you is very important to actually getting the results that you are often after, and will allow you to quickly and easily ensure that you are really getting a good result, rather than simply hoping for a good outcome.

Careful work with one of the selection tools can allow you to cut out people, objects, or even places from images and combine then with other components to create a truly spectacular image that is really amazing to work with. However, you need to be sure to watch carefully the aspect ratios, and proportions of the images that you are combining to ensure that they maintain the realistic look that you are after. Care and attention given to the smaller details will play a large role in exactly how successful your attempts are, and of course, practice will always make it easier to get the results that you are actually wanting to have.

Be sure that you spend a good amount of time covering the various selection tools and even using some tutorials to help you hone your skills if necessary. Mastery of these skills will allow you to quickly and easily manipulate images exactly as you want them, without an abundance of problems that you are unable to deal with. Just work carefully to ensure that you get the right result and feel free to repeat parts of the selection process that you are not completely comfortable with until you achieve the desired result.
