Many of the All Time Greats Were Fairly Short After All

Small basketball players throughout history have wowed crowds and played at the highest level of basketball. Spud Webb, Tyrone Bogues and many more have all excelled at the game. They all have certain things in common that helped them to succeed. Looking at these things can also help you to succeed as a smaller player in basketball. Here are some tips on using small size to your advantage in the game of basketball.

Without a doubt, the single best thing about being small is the fact that you are likely going to be much quicker than the majority of players out there. Using this quickness can be a huge advantage. Whether running the fast break, or scrambling for a loose ball, quickness can level the playing ground as a small player.

Another big advantage to being smaller is that you can fit into tight spaces. Many small players are excellent at driving to the basket and fitting in tight passes. This is because they have a low center of gravity and can maneuver in much smaller areas. Use this ability to your advantage and drive to the hoop. Some defensive players are even more likely to lose you when you run off of a screen in the flow of the offense. Being smaller means you are tougher to locate after all.

Small players throughout history are known for being ball hawks. That is they are able to steal, pilfer and create turnovers. This is largely due to the low center of gravity mentioned above, as well as extremely quick hands. When the ball goes down low to the inside players, a smaller player can often slide down and knock the ball loose before they can get off a shot. This ability to play defense sets many of the smaller superstars apart.

Being small certainly does not mean that you can not be a great basketball player. The main thing to understand is that the basics of the game are the same for everyone. Shoot the ball well, play good defense and chase every loose ball as though the game depends upon it. This will get you in the middle of things regardless of your size. Just ask Spud Webb or Mugsy Bogues - they played decades in the NBA.
