Using Step Counters

Shannon L. Buck
A step counter, also known as a pedometer, is an effective way to track how far a person walks throughout the day. Many will also track how many calories a person burns. Using a counter is a fun way to track your progress throughout the way, and will help you to be sure that you are meeting your fitness goals.

What it Does

The counter will track not only how many miles are walked in a day, but how many steps are taken. Some counters will also tell a person how many calories have been burned. It can be checked numerous times a day so that you can keep track of what your progress is.

How to Use It

Attach the counter to your waistband, belt or sock after dressing in the morning. The placement location will be indicated on the package. Keep the counter on throughout the day. Many people opt to put it on upon rising in the morning, taking it off only to shower and when they climb into bed.

Recommended By

Dr. Mehmet Oz recommends the use of a pedometer in tracking your weight loss goals. It can be a useful way to be sure that you are getting at least the minimal number of steps necessary each day.

Adding Steps

Try to add as many extra steps as is possible throughout the day. 10,000 steps is the minimal goal. More will not hurt. Do this by taking stairs rather than elevators, and parking further away from your destinations whenever you go somewhere. Take a walk after dinner to get in even more steps.

Counter Care

Keep the counter out of water. It is not waterproof. Be careful not to drop it or step on it, and make sure that it is not left in a high heat area. By incorporating these precautions, you will extend the life of your pedometer.
