Using Supplements for Chronic Hip Pain

Hip pain is always miserable and when you have it is nearly impossible to escape. You cannot immobilize your hips like you can an arm or an ankle. Our hips are used for everything from sitting to getting up and walking to the kitchen for a glass of water. If you are like me, you do not want to keep taking pain medication after pain medication to try and alleviate the pain. There are supplements that are purported to be beneficial in alleviating hip pain. These supplements are said to be most beneficial when hip pain is arthritic in nature.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate

You have probably watched dozens of commercials promoting supplements for arthritis pain that include these two ingredients. So, for hip pain that is arthritic in nature is makes sense to talk about these two ingredients. There are people who swear by these and there are those who say that they have experienced no relief. I am in the latter category, as I have noticed no difference in hip pain after taking a supplement with glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate. Now, there are certain brands that are said to have research backing up their effectiveness. Perhaps I need to seek out this research and find the brand with the most research backing it and give it a try.

Vitamin D Supplements

As a person who struggles with a vitamin D deficiency that seems to just never want to go away, it is very possible that this deficiency does play a role in some of my hip pain. I am currently taking a high-dose prescription of vitamin D again. I am just halfway throughout the prescription, so while I am not noticing a difference yet, it is probably because I am still likely deficient.

Calcium Supplements

We know that calcium is very important for the health of our bones. If we do not have enough calcium, the health of our bones will suffer. As we women get older, calcium is even more critical. At this time, my calcium levels are at a point where they should not be causing problems. However, with the vitamin D deficiency, there could be a trickle-down effect. So, this could play a minor role in the hip pain.

Before taking any supplements for hip pain, talk to your doctor. This is especially true if you take any medications or other supplements, to prevent interactions.
