Using a Tie Tack and Tie Clip with a Suit

Chad R. Herman
When a man first starts wearing a tie he is usually very young, and it's usually some variation of clip on, zip on, etc. These great ties have a way to keep them together no matter what, that is usually thread because they are sewed together. Most of the time a man first comes into contact with a tie clip or a tie pin is when a relative gives him one, or his is given it as a gift of some sort. Tie clips or pins are extremely practical as men's accessories go, and it is recommended every man have at least 2. These devices are to keep your time from separating and looking horrible or from moving all over the place. When your suit jacket is open, it sits there advertising every thigh that man wants to convey with that clip or pin. This is another one of those accessories where you can show off who you are, a priceless heirloom, or some sort affiliation. But how do you accurately wear one for these?

We're talking about two separate items here, and we'll have to take each in its own accord. The tie clip is just that, a clip. It is a long piece rectangular piece of metal, usually gold or silver, folded in half in such a way that it holds the two pieces of your tie together. This is one of the easiest ways to hold your tie together and in one place.Once you have your tie tied and set up the way you want it to, find the center of the tie. This is usually about the spot where your sternum is. Take the tie clip, and with the decorated part facing away from you and out, slide the tie clip over both pieces of the tie. As you continue to slide the clip, also slide it under the open part of your dress shirt. The clip is now adhered to your shirt and your ties. If it is strong enough, and its gripping power is good enough, it will hold your tie all night. The down side of a tie clip is that as it ages it becomes more and more elastic,a nd looses its gripping power. Once this happens, the tie clip becomes obsolete.

Now the tie pin, on the other hand, never looses its use because it is a pin. Usually, a tie pin has a decorative piece with a long needle, and a place where that needle goes into. Coming off of the needle entrance, is usually a small chain. Unhook the decorative piece from its holder and set the decorative piece down. Find the button hole at about your sternum and undo the button. Place the chain and it's little bar into the button hole. Now button the button with the piece dangling from it. Take the decorative part and find the part of the tie that is directly at the same button hole. Push the pin through both pieces of the tie, and push it into the tie tack holder. You tie is now securely connected to you via the shirt and the tie tack.
