For several years now I have filed my federal and state tax returns using Turbo Tax Intuit Tax Freedom Project website. This year I have checked and the site will not be available until sometime in mid- January. You do have to meet the annual eligibility requirements announced at the beginning of each year. There are annual income requirements as well as a few other filing requirements that have to be met in order to qualify. One disadvantage to Turbo Tax Intuit Tax Freedom Project is that not all states participate or offer the electronic filing for free. This will vary from state to state. You can still do your federal return at no charge but you will either have to pay a fee or do your state return by paper.

The benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. The Turbo Tax Intuit Tax Freedom website has countless benefits. Right off the bat, for most people the services are free. The software takes you step by step through each area of the return, asking simple questions that are understandable even to someone who has never filed a tax return before. There are deduction finder features to help you maximize your deductions. There are lots of things that are deductable that most people do not think about. Turbo Tax Intuit Tax Freedom takes you through a series of error checks and audit alert checks to ensure the return is as correct as possible before it is submitted to the IRS. This saves you time in making correction and flags potential audit issues that you may want to be aware of before you file your return.

The entire time you are going through the steps of filing with Turbo Tax Intuit Tax Freedom it will keep are running tally on the left upper side of the screen, informing you of your current standing. It will show how much you owe or how much your refund is at that current stage of the filing process.

Once the return is completed, you are offered the option to file your state return, keep in mind some offer this service for free and others charge a fee, while other states do not offer electronic filing through Turbo Tax Intuit Tax Freedom at all. If you choose to file your state return you will be guided through the steps of the return in the same manner as the federal return.

Once the return(s) have been completed, you are given the option to print and file your return by mail or to file them electronically. If you want your returns and possible refunds faster, it is highly recommended that you file electronically. You may have the option to sign your return with an electronic signature as well. In order to do this you will be required to provide key figures from your previous years return. Signing electronically eliminates the necessity to print any paperwork at all. If you cannot sign electronically, you will be instructed on the forms to print and where to mail them to. It is very important that you print and sign these papers. It will not delay your refund but if you do not mail them in you will be prevented from filing electronically next tax season.

You can track the status of your return online by logging back into your account a few days after you have submitted the return. The status will either be pending, accepted, or declined. You can get more information about each status at the website when you log in.

When filing the return there are many help options available. There are topics that answer most common questions filers have, but you can also request live assistance from a representative via chat.

Turbo Tax Intuit Tax Freedom offers many optional features you can purchase separately, such as, audit protection, which would help you in the event you are selected for an audit.

This is by far the most comprehensive, well structured, user friendly e-file site available. Turbo Tax Intuit Tax Freedom makes filing the dreaded taxes simple, quick, and almost enjoyable. Even if you do not meet the requirements for the free service it is worth purchasing Turbo Tax Intuit Tax Service Packages. It seems there are questions and different experiences when it comes to prior year returns. I would suggest that you check the website and contact customer support with your questions and concerns for complete update information. Thanks for you feedback and comments.

I have always been able to access my previous tax returns without any fees, but this could be something that Intuit has changed about its site and database. I have not tried to access my last yearts return, as I had a hard copy of it. I wasn't trying to be misleading but in years past I have not no fee and no problem accessing my information.

Just FYI: I was reading more about the Turbo Tax Intuit Tax Freedom Project and contrary to what the article says, you can NOT access your info from previous years unless you pay a fee.
