Using the Twist Fold with Prefold Diapers

Let's Do the Twist!

J. McDaniel
The twist, also known as the bikini twist, is perhaps the easiest fold to learn with prefold diapers. It features extra absorbency in the front and a "poop pouch" in the back when folded correctly. This is perhaps one of the best first folds to learn - it builds confidence in your folding skills and also is one of the backbones to many other folds. If you've had trouble doing any other folds, this is definitely the fold for you to try next. So without further ado, let's do the twist fold!

Start off with the prefold diaper flat beneath your baby. The edge of the prefold diaper should be ending where you want the waistline to end on your baby. Make sure it's not too high up - too high of a waist in the back means not enough material to cover the front.

Now twist the prefold diaper so that each corner is on the opposite side of where it originally lay. Make sure the twist will be slightly in front of your baby and not below him or her. Too low of a twist will lead to less absorbency in the front and no poop pouch in the back.

Pull the corners of the prefold diaper up and smooth out the area where you twisted the prefold diaper so that it is relatively flat against your baby's stomach. This is a good time to double check your twist and make sure it is in the right place.

Now pull the corners in the back of the prefold diaper forward and pin them in to place in the front. Make sure to pull the cloth tightly. If you need to, fold the front of the diaper inwards to shorten its length.

Now if you choose, you can put a diaper cover on your baby to prevent leaks or let her go without a diaper cover to promote air circulation. That's it - you just folded a prefold diaper using the twist method! Give yourself a pat on the back - you deserve it!

If you're having problems with the twist fold, give the newspaper fold a try. It's another popular fold that's easy to do and has similar features (minus the extra absorbency).

This is perhaps one of the best first folds to learn - it builds confidence in your folding skills and also is one of the backbones to many other folds.
