Using Twitter to Share Content

Twittering to Spread the Word

Erin Duff
I've been a big fan of Twitter since late March of 2009. I joined specifically because I knew that Dave Matthews (@DaveJMatthews) had an account that he updated frequently. I thought I'd give it a try because of him, not knowing who I would meet and how Twitter would become so instrumental in my everyday life shortly afterward.

I began twittering more often throughout the next few months, not realizing the people that I would meet, the connections I would make, and the information I would learn. I never knew I could publish my thoughts in less than 140 characters, but it was possible! I mainly find myself tweeting with fellow Dave Matthews Band fans, who I have been able to share a similar love for the band's music with, learn about new bands, tour information, and most importantly, I've been able to connect with music lovers such as myself who I can speak with on a daily basis. I never thought an online connection could bring me such happiness, but it has been possible through my Twitter account @myfavoritesong.

As previously mentioned, I follow several Dave Matthews Band fans, too many to mention during this article's publication date, especially being that this would quickly turn into a Dave Matthews Band fan article. I also find myself following some celebrities for news and quirky life updates such as @rainnwilson (Dwight from The Office), @joshgroban, @MarthaStewart, @jason_mraz, and @blues_traveler, among many others. I'm also able to catch up on news via @ACNewsFeed, @breakingnews, @thehuffpost, and @rPulse. I can also follow my favorite college football team (WVU) via several of their feeds as well. Twitter has a use for anything and everything you can possibly think of, no matter your interests and hobbies. It provides a special (and sometimes very specific) connection that I haven't found elsewhere, and makes Twitter a huge part of my social networking experience.

I currently follow over 400 people and have over 300 people that follow my feed, so I was lucky to have a built-in audience in which I was able to share some of my Associated Content articles with. I began posting articles that I had recently written, and was amazed at how much my content views continued to climb. Twitter also gave me the ability to have automatic feedback via my follower's comments, and I could answer questions they had or express my thanks to those who left me comments. Twitter provides an immediate response to article content, and allows you to learn about what people are interested in and would like you to write about.

I will now continue to use Twitter not only to make stronger connections with the friends I have made, but I will also use it as a platform to share my content as I see fit. I certainly don't want to overwhelm anyone with articles I share, but that's part of the beauty of Twitter-no one is forced to read the information presented to them unless they choose to, and if they enjoy it, they can share it with others.
