Using Wicker Baskets to Decorate Your Home

Lori Godin
Baskets are not only an essential part of the organization of every home; they are also a great element of design. In my home, they hold everything from remotes to an organized filing system to his and her socks. Wicker baskets are essential in every room. I have one specific basket in every room as catch all, for all of the things that do not have a place in the room, or that tend to sit on a table. In the entryway there is a basket for wallets, keys and sunglasses, under the table there is another basket, flat and is designated for mail. In my home, wicker basket are more than a decoration, they are one of the things that keep us organized.

I was lucky enough to find shelving at the local home store that came with the perfect slots for square baskets. Many of these shelving units are large enough, and stylish enough to take the place of dressers. The baskets act as drawers, and the shelving unit acts as the dresser. This is a great idea if you are cramped for space, these units are square, and take up less than half of the floor space that a dresser would take up.

These open faced shelving units, with a dresser are the perfect way to divide up small spaces. They act as room dividers, storage and the wicker basket are available in a variety of colors, and shapes to fit the shelving unit. This makes them a stylish addition to any space.

Wicker baskets are available in sizes that could accommodate anything that you need to store within your home. A more durable wicker, treated rattan, or wicker storage cases with lids are also available at most home stores. These are a blessing to disorganized closet space, and toy rooms where everything seems to be strewn everywhere.

Wicker baskets could be used in the living room, topped with glass countertops to create a table. I have seen many of these in popular home and style magazines; they can be used as a coffee table and create a shabby chic, or a modern look, depending on the furniture that you decide to pair with the table.

Wicker chests can be used in the master and guest bedroom to store extra blankets, pillows, towels and any other linens that may be needed by the guests, or those using the bedroom. This is one of my favorite places to store those pillows that are only for decoration. If using a wicker chest to store decorative pillows, it is a good idea to use lined baskets, you don't want to catch the fragile pillows on a piece of wicker.

Using these tips, wicker baskets can help add an element of style to your home while creating organization.
