USPS Postal Service Lists Possible Post Office Closings

Is Your Local Post Office Location Going to Be Closed?

Darrin Atkins
Do you like being able to go to your neighborhood USPS post office to buy stamps or mail a package? Well, you better start looking for a different location because that one in your neighborhood may be closed up in the coming months.

With the United States Postal Service facing a $7 billion loss this fiscal year, it needs to cut costs and that will potentially include closing up to 700 different post office locations around the country, according to the Associated Press. An original list of over 3,000 possible locations most likely will be narrowed to around 700 locations.

Your Local Post Office

Will your local post office be closed? Nothing has been set in stone yet but the USPS has made a list of candidates and that list is available at www.prc.gov. The earliest changes will occur in October of 2009.

The Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) website is likely to very busy over the next few weeks so you may have to try again when fewer people are trying to access the site. People are understandably worried that their local post office will be closed, partly because of the inconvenience caused by having to go farther away to another location.

People get emotionally attached to their local post office and to the people who work at the branches. Nobody wants any post office branches to close, especially the people who look forward to visiting the local branches and who have friends or family members who work there.

Do Something About It

Maybe you think that you cannot do anything about the post office locations that will be closed in your community. Well, think again.

You can write to your elected federal representatives to the United States Senate and House of Representatives and tell them that you demand that the government and the United States Postal Service find another solution rather than close local postal service stores in your neighborhood.

You can find your senators at the U.S. Senate website and your representatives to the House at House website. Call or write or email your senator or congressman today and tell him or her that you refuse to have your local post office closed.

Tell them that you don't mind if the price of stamps and other services goes higher, but that you refuse to cut back on the number of days of service and you refuse to have your local post office shut down.

Eliminate home delivery-Instead, have central post boxes on every street; let residents pick up mail at the street central boxes (such as is being used presently in Pismo Beach and other ares.
(Handicapped persons can be serviced personally)

If you belong to the local "GOOD OLD BOY" program then the USPS is a great place to work. If you dont it SUCKS! 15 Years in management and fighting the union and they FINALLY ran me off, I know why someone can and does go POSTAL.

Post office is needed everywhere for all reasons, Its insane to see how you can get a letter from AZ to WI in 3 Days and for only 0.44 cents and still, complaints! Cheaper than any other mail service and Faster! Keep them open! We ALL need the post office!

Marlene's suggestion is a good one. Close them on Saturdays. I am sure there are post offices that don't really do enough business to justify their existence, but they always seem to be in the places they are needed the most, like in mostly senior citizen areas. It's a shame.
