It took 1 terrorist attack, 6 years, and 7.5 tons of steel from the World Trade Center to create the USS New York, an amphibious transport dock ship. The USS New York was christened at a ceremony in Louisiana on March 1, 2008. Members of the NYPD and the FDNY were present as Dotty England, wife of the Deputy Secretary of Defense, Gordon England, christened the USS New York.
The 7.5 tons of twisted metal from Ground Zero was used to create the bow of the USS New York. It carries the official logo "Never Forget" and is named the USS New York to commemorate the lives that were lost to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The USS New York was built by Northrop Grumman Ship Systems and is the fifth ship in the San Antonio class amphibious transport dock.
The USS New York is 684 feet long, 105 feet wide, weighs 25,000 tons, and cost one billion dollars to build. Once the ship is launched in to commission, it will hold a crew of 360 sailors and 700 marines to be delivered ashore. The commission of the USS New York is scheduled for fall of 2009 in New York City. Along with the USS New York, two other amphibious transport dock ships are being built to memorialize the September 11th tragedy.
The USS Somerset will honor the brave crew and passengers that gave their lives on the United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed near Shanksville in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The USS Arlington will honor victims of American Airlines Flight 77 that crashed into the Pentagon.
The USS New York, USS Somerset, and USS Arlington are all names that have been used before by the Navy. The keel of fifth USS New York was laid on September 11, 1911, exactly 90 years before terrorist invasion inspired the name of the sixth USS New York. The fifth USS New York was active in both World Wars before being decommissioned in 1946.

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
This world in arms is not spending money alone.
It is spending the sweat of its labourers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.
The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities.
It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals.
It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement.
We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat.
We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people.
This is, I repeat, the best way of life to be found on the road the world has been taking.
This is not a way of life at all, in any true
Its a huge waste of money and insulting! Most of the people that died in the WTC and associated terrorist activities were civilians. This is the same as melting down parts of the WTC for a Nuclear bomb.
Why not assist those who lost families and those that have had continued medical problems due to the work at ground zero. 1 Billion dollars can be better spent making American lives better rather than taking more.
I was at Ground Zero soon after 9/11. It was so tragic. What a touching tribute to the victims and their families.
Great job on this
Wonderful presentation about such a tragic day!
thank you for this. I can't wait to see the USS New York when it is in NY....
