Utah Winter Hikes

Utah, with its natural beauty, vast areas of wilderness and national parks, makes an interesting location for winter hiking. Here are some tips and suggestions for winter hiking in Utah.

Arches National Park in Utah is home to the Delicate Arch, one of the most well known landmarks in the state. You cannot see the Delicate Arch from the road. There is a one and a half mile trail which goes right under the Delicate Arch - perfect for photo opportunities. Although it is a relatively short hike, the trail is hard work and suited to experienced climbers. It should be avoided in ice, snow or bad weather. It's a good spot to visit on winter's more mild days, however. Be prepared to climb. Alternatively visit the Delicate Arch viewing point where you can get a good glimpse and take photos.

The Devil's Garden Loop is another trail to avoid in snow, icy conditions or low temperature. However, on winter's milder days, it can be enjoyable for experienced hikers. Although this is a popular Utah hiking trail, it becomes much more quiet in the winter. Areas of the trail are rugged - be prepared for some fancy footwork. This trail tours a lot of natural arches - geology enthusiasts will love it.

With a name like Donut Falls Trail, how can you not like it? Homer Simpson would like it, anyway. It is another place to avoid in bad winter weather. However, in more temperate weather, it is a fun place to visit. The hike ends in a waterfall which cascades through a donut shaped stone. This trail is loaded with interesting caverns and rocks. Some areas of the trail are not smooth and require some climbing.

Finally, some Utah winter hiking tips will help to ensure that your trip is safe and enjoyable. The winter can provide a break from Utah's high summer temperatures as well as crowds on the trails. However, winter hiking in Utah presents its own dangers.

Avoid snowy and icy conditions - the uneven landscape means that hikers are prone to slipping and falling in snow and ice. Also, canyons and ravines can be masked by the snow. Also, although much of Utah is dessert, it still can get dangerously cold in the winter - particularly at night. Always thoroughly research a trail before embarking on it to ensure it is safe for the season and your skill level.
