UT-Austin Shooting: Gunman Kills Self, Police Search for Second Suspect
UT-Austin Campus on Lockdown After Gunman Opens Fire
University of Texas at Austin reported an active shooting situation was taking place at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. One gunman is confirmed dead of a self inflicted gunshot wound. No one else has been reported injured.
Police are currently looking for a possible second suspect. It is not yet known if the gunman was a student at the university or what his motive was.
It is unknown how many shots were fired, but various media reports put the number at 8-10 based on witness reports.
According to the Statesman, UT spokesman Don Hale said it wasn't clear if there was a second suspect. This is a precaution given different witness descriptions given to police by witnesses.
Police had the gunman contained in the Perry-Castaneda library, one of several libraries on the UT campus, on the sixth floor where the gunman apparently took his own life. There were no shots fired by law enforcement. The library is located in the southern part of the campus.
According to the UT-Austin website, they are asking students to stay in place and lock their doors. A loudspeaker was announcing there was an emergency on campus. The alert was also sent by text message to staff and students.
Martin Luther King Jr. from Red River Street to University Avenue is closed at this time. Everyone should stay out of the area for his or her own safety. The campus is expected to remain closed for the next several hours.
Hale said, "The shooter is dead on the sixth floor of the Perry-Castaneda Library. No identification. Apparently took his own life."
Law enforcement personnel involved with the search include University Police, Austin Police, Travis County Sheriff's Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, and Department of Defense K-9 units. Helicopters could be seen flying overhead and armored police vehicles are on scene.

The University of Texas at Austin was the location of the 1966 tower shooting in which sniper Charles Whitman went on a rampage.
From a 28th-floor observation deck of the school's landmark 307-foot tower, Whitman shot at people on the street below. He killed sixteen and wounded 31 before police killed him. His first victim of the day was his own mother who he stabbed to death.

Post a CommentWhat can we expect when our best accredited educators believe that moral principles are an "Intrusion" into education and the science department teaches that people are just highly developed apes? Look up primate in a good collegiate dictionary: Humans, Gorillas and Chimpanzees. What's wrong with all these shootings? Have you never heard of "survival of the fittest? That's what the kids at Columbine were spouting while they shot their classmates.
Oh gosh! When I saw "UT" my mind automatically translated it to "University of Tennessee". Such a shame that violence has touched another generation on the same campus. My prayers for the students and staff.
