V Ratings Impressive and Reviews Are Good

The Season Premiere of V Brought in Some Very Good Ratings Numbers for ABC

Ryan Christopher DeVault
The V ratings were announced and the results were pretty good. The V ratings from the season premiere almost reached 14 million viewers for the night, easily making it a success in the debut episode. The ratings for V were being hotly watched by many advertisers who wanted to know if a show like this could do well on network television, and ABC has got to be happy with the early V ratings. The review of V have also been quite positive, leading one to assume that the ratings could possibly continue if the show can continue to provide strong episodes and character development in the coming November sweeps weeks.

Not only did V draw a ratings number of nearly 14 million total viewers, but the show was extremely strong in the most important demographic to many advertisers. According to Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly, V drew the night's highest adult 18-49 numbers, and had the highest 18-49 performance in that time slot for ABC in the last three years. Those are very high marks for ABC Executives, and it's definitely a sign that V is doing something right to attract viewers. Maybe it's the intriguing premise, or maybe it's the great ensemble cast that they were able to put together, but the V season premiere can be marked down as a success.

There is now going to be an important question facing ABC in the coming weeks, and the network doesn't want to be slow to react to those facts. The fact is that most networks start pulling their regular programming as the holidays approach, and a hiatus tends to happen for the bigger shows in parts of December and January. ABC has only scheduled V to run for four episodes before the fall finale, and then the show was planned to return in the spring as a regular airing if it was successful. With the buzz surrounding V at its best level yet, it seems like it could be a big mistake to hold the show back when they could run out some more episodes in the fall and capitalize upon the following it already has developed.

The season premiere of V is definitely going to be considered a ratings hit, and that will put this episode of V in the top 20 shows for the week when the next Nielsen ratings come out. The immediate question will be whether the numbers continue to increase through word of mouth, or whether the numbers take a dip now that people have had a chance to see what the show was all about. There are quite a few people that will be keeping a close eye on that bottom line to see if V can survive on ABC and whether it can continue to be a lucrative draw for the 18-49 demographic.

  • ABC is killing this show11/18/2009

The fact that they are only showing 4 episodes before ending it for the Fall and picking back up in the Spring is going to kill the show for good. No one is going to get into the show enough after 4 episodes to pick it back up in the Spring. What dolts.

    Yawn. We're food.

There is nothing sadder the whiners and bitchers who complain about change. Change happens, you can either learn to adapt or you can die.

Pathetic little inbred losers. Go suck on Dick Cheney's Teet

watched it. disappointed. Lousy acting and flat characters. Won't be following this one!

  • What V is...11/6/2009

I don't know what it is... but it sure isn't up to the level of Battlestar Galactica as far as remakes go.

First of all, I know this is meant to be entertaining, but I just was really dissapointed in this absolutely flaccid, common-denominator, dumbed-down offering. It got great ratings because we were all curious about it. But seriously? This makes season 3 of Heroes not suck by comparison.

What the creative team of the new BSG did was reinvent the series, take just the basics and made a really great series out of the shell of the old campy 70s show. They gave it realism, believability, an awesome cast and a fantastic, fast-moving storyline (with some lags in season 4, but com eon) They actually CHANGED a lot of things that didn't work in the first series and updated their concept for a much hipper, sophisticated modern audience.

    But the new V?

Why bother remaking it as campy as the old one? Why not just run the old one again if you're not going to try to make anything BET

I don't think it was an attack on Obama per se, if you want to see it that way, then OK the pilot ALSO contained an attack on George W. Bush.

The Bush Whitehouse approach to media was to snub them if they weren't "friendly" to the Bush administration, the "threat" was, if you aren't nice to us, we'll not only snub you, but give scoops to your competitors.

I thought it was pretty evenly handled, and that the message was not anti-Obama or anti-Bush but was more of an "Always Question Authority REGARDLESS of who is in charge" statement.

I'll be back for the next episode.

But yeah please cut down on the cliches.

    Michael X.

I agree with Yorrick. I'm a big fan of the original and think they progressed to fast in the first episode, and the direction of the acting is to cliched. It's like they dumbed it down and relied on the visuals. A very amateur way of presentation. Even seeing the trailer for the rest of the season didn't impress me. Will see, but I'm not sure If I can last after the second episode.

Yeah, I watched in the 80s and thought it was a great show then and now with the remake, after watching, I felt it was done very well. The pilot run was good and its going to get even better just like the original. This was a really good idea to bring this back. Kudos.

I missed this and forgot to DVR it. Good review.

Wow, you guys have never seen the 1983 movie/series have you? The characters are supposed to be overly obvious and cliched. This is a cult hit that is being remade. And Forecaster - I hope you never see the day when you can't afford insurance and you have to go without healthcare because it's too expensive. It's an all to common experience here in one of the richest countries of the world. If Canada, Greece, France, and the U.K. can manage universal healcare of some sort, then we can too.
