Vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii

Rik Rodriguez
My first visit to Hawaii was in the 1970s. I studied a bit about Hawaii, but nothing could have really prepared me for The Big Island of Hawaii. First off it has the most diverse climate per square mile in the world. This doesn't mean very much to some people. But what it really does mean is you can play in the snow on top of Mauna Kea and enjoy the warm sunny beaches the same day. Visit an active volcano and the same day be in a rain forest only miles away. The Big Island of Hawaii is old Hawaii. Its a young island compared to Oahu. There are many advantages to vacationing on the Big Island of Hawaii. It less expensive than most of the other islands to live and visit. Its has a laid back feeling. Even the cities here are still small and have room for growth. The food is great here and costs more than the mainland because most of the food is imported. On the Big Island you will find a tropical paradise but beware. The Big Island of Hawaii is not for everyone. It rains almost everyday here. Many mainlanders are unaware of the climate here. If you are on the upper elevations of the Big Island you will need winter clothes. Its gets cold enough to snow and the snow sticks!

Hilo and Kona are the main cities on the Big Island and you will find almost every kind of food that you would on the mainland. You will also find all the local items that you normally associate with Hawaii. You know mac-nuts, pineapple, papaya, bananas etc. You will also find an international airport in Kona and Hilo. It takes a few hours to drive from Hilo to Kona. You will want to rent a car to see all of the Big Islands sites. It is not uncommon to see several rainbows a day in Hawaii. Even several rainbows at a time. The Big Island is relaxing warm and inviting. Its a great place to spend your honeymoon and a great place to retire.

One of the great aspects that I love about Hawaii is their are no snakes. In general the people of the Big Island are friendly and helpful. So if you are looking for a unique vacation the Big Island is for you. Remember to always be respectful of the local people of Hawaii.
