Vacation in Gay Friendly Hawaii

Rik Rodriguez
If you are searching for a unique vacation that offers the most diverse climate per square mile in the world, Hawaii is a great place to go. In general the Big Island of Hawaii is gay friendly, in fact the island culture honors gays in their community. In ancient times Mahu was a term that was given to men that preferred the company of other men, while some may use the term in a derogatory fashion, I have always heard it used by family members with affection. The Big Island of Hawaii is a place that you can travel from a snow capped volcano to magnificent beaches in a matter of minutes, where double helix rainbows are a common site. It is a great place for you and your partner to have that special get away you have always thought about.

Most of the hotels on the Big Island are gay friendly, but I would like to suggest a few places to stay. Kalani Oceanside Eco-Resort in Pahoa, Hawaii is a gay friendly resort and is a good place to start or end any vacation on the Big Island. Kalani is a gay owned naturalist club near the quaint little town of Pahoa and is only a 30 minute drive from Hilo. It is over 100 acres of pure ecstasy and offers a sauna, jacuzzi and wonderfully stimulating massage therapy. You can stay in their cottages, lodge or spend time having a romantic getaway in the tree house. They have plenty of events and adventures you can participate in or you can just relax on the grounds. Of course the food is incredible.

Another great place to stay on the opposite side of the island is a bed and breakfast called A Aloha Guest House and which is only about an hours drive south of the Kona airport. A Aloha Guest House is located in a unique area near citrus and coffee plantations which border the state forest preserve. It is 5 minutes away from Kealakekua Bay which is an underwater preserve that has plenty of fish, turtles and the occasional whale to be seen. The Big Island isn't known for its night life but there are a few gay bars, one being the Mask Bar in Kona at the Kopiko Plaza, also the Big Island has much more reasonable prices compared to Maui and Oahu.

The Big Island has many beaches that have different colors of sand, including black sand, green sand, white sand, brown sand and even a beach that has magic sands that change color with the currents and tides.

The food on the Big Island is great and tropical fruits such as papayas, pineapples and mango's are plentiful when in season. Organic produce is easy to find at the farmers markets. You will enjoy the diversity of the food on the Big Island, they have everything from sushi to pizza, depending on your taste and pocket book you will be able to find something to satisfy all of your whims.

I love the Big Island, there is so much to see and do. It has more of a country feel to it than the other islands. If you are looking for a place to relax and get away from it all, the Big Island will be one of the best vacations of your life. The Aloha spirit is waiting to welcome you.
