Vacation Guide to Bulgaria

Kaloyan K.
When choosing a vacation spot there are many things to consider before beginning the planning. By far the most important is the location or locations in which the vacation will take place. Often people look for something new and exotic when choosing a vacation spot. A perfect option for the more adventurous tourist is Eastern Europe, more specifically Bulgaria. The country offers an incredible amount of places with historical importance, beaches with Western type resorts during the summer months, and ski resorts during the winter months that are in no way inferior to those in Western Europe. In this article I will cover some of the best destinations for tourists to explore so if you are looking for a vacation a little out of the ordinary read on!

First of all I would like to talk about Bulgaria in general as a bit of information on the country can be the deciding factor for some people. First of all the official language is Bulgarian which is a Slavic language and so is very different from English or any other Latin language making communication a bit more difficult for Western tourists. The country also uses the Cyrillic alphabet meaning most tourists will not be able to understand a lot of street signs and so on. However in the more popular tourist destinations like major cities and resorts many people speak English fluently so the language is not much of an issue. Restaurants and hotels also provide menus in English and hire staff that speaks English specifically because of the amounts of Western tourists that visit the country every year.

Next I would like to talk about some of the places of historical significance which may be of interest to tourists visiting Bulgaria. The first is Sofia the capitol, most people will land in Sofia as the majority of international flights land there so if you are there any way exploring the city a bit is worth it. The city is one of the oldest in Europe and contains many significant places of interest. One is the Museum of Archeology which has a huge collection of artifacts from the long history of the Bulgarian state. Another landmark is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral as it is also very old and also beautiful making it very popular with tourists.

Outside of the capitol there are many other places of interest many of which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage list which in itself says a lot. If you would like more information on those take a look at this website: http://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/bg.

For those that intend to vacation in Bulgaria for the beautiful ski or beach resorts there also many options available. When it comes to the Black Sea it is a great choice for those wanting to experience something different yet modern. Resorts like Sunny Beach and Golden Sands offer the modern luxury of Western Europe mixed in with traditional Bulgarian culture creating a unique experience that is hard to forget. The same is true during the winter months when ski resorts are very popular offering cheap prices and excellent skiing and snowboarding slopes. Some examples are the resorts of Borovets, Pamporovo, and Bansko. For more information on resorts in Bulgaria check with your travel agency as it is simply too much information to try and explain in such a short article.

Lastly I hope that this overview has been helpful for those curious about vacations in Bulgaria and has given you some idea about what to expect if you decide visit Bulgaria.
