The people of Kona still enjoy a slow-paced, relaxed approach to life and greet visitors with the warm welcoming spirit of aloha. Leave your fast-passed attitude at home- there is no place, and certainly no need for it here. Many people who visit Kona name it as their favorite of all the major Hawaiian Islands. Visitors beware, there is certainly something tempting about leaving reality behind, and settling in the paradise King Kamehameha once called home.
While luxury resorts and tourist activity abound, Kona's people respect the rich culture of the area, and proudly honor many traditions. If you're lucky enough to visit the Big Island of Hawaii during November, mark the 36th annual Kona Coffee Cultural Festival as a "must do." Noted as Hawaii's oldest food festival, this dynamic community event honors Kona's coffee heritage. The ambitious schedule of Kona events features coffee tastings, coffee picking contests, special coffee recipes and even a locally brewed coffee stout. The prestigious Kona cupping contest is the highlight of the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival, but you'll also discover parades, cultural programs and exhibits from talented local artists.
The diversity of Hawaii can't be overstated. In fact, a short drive of an hour or so often reveals an entirely different climate. You'll be hard pressed to find another place on Earth where you can make a snowman at the top of a 31,000 foot mountain (Muana Kea) in the morning, and by lunch be sitting on a stunning blacksand beach, capturing a tan and cooling off with a tropical drink. Exceptional weather and the presence of an incredible 11 climatic regions provide unending possibilities for the adventure minded. Kona activities abound. Those visiting Kona may snorkel a dynamic coral reef, walk along a green or black sand beach, bike ride along simple dirt roads, and even ski. A variety of tour operators help ensure you'll find just the right tour to meet your needs and sense of adventure. From around the island guided bus tours, to ATV mountain adventures lead by local cowboys, star gazing at the top of the world's largest mountain, Naturalist guided hikes and donkey-back excursions through lush valleys, and Park Ranger guided night-time adventures to discover active lava flows, Kona's day-trips won't disappoint. Most activities are moderately priced in the $75-$150 per person range for a half or full day tour, and often include lunch.
Quaint art galleries and handmade local crafts, fascinating places of historic significance, coffee and bookshops, and a variety of bars and restaurants round out downtown Kona's waterfront attractions. For the budget conscious, there are also reasonably priced touristy-type gift shops full of Hawaiian trinkets that are just waiting to make their way to the "mainland."
The Kona International Airport is easy to navigate, and just a short drive 20-40 minute drive (depending on traffic) from downtown Kona. Visitors are advised to make arrangements for a rental car well in advance, as rental companies have been known to "sell out" of cars. Kona offers an array of lodging options. From no-nonsense hotels, to luxury resorts, private beachfront homes, hostels, and efficiency rentals, Kona offers something priced for nearly every budget.
Average daytime temperatures in Kona range from the mid 80's F during summer months, to mid 70's F during winter months. Gentle trade winds are the norm, resulting in a tranquil year round paradise. Shorts, loose shirts, and stable walking shoes are advised wardrobe staples. But be sure to pack a pair of jeans, and a jacket too as areas of higher elevation get down right cold. Did we mention your must-have swimsuit? You should plan to wear a hat, bring lots of sunscreen, and reapply often! When day-tripping to rural areas of the Island, always carry extra water and a snack. Invest in a good map, and stop to ask locals for directions if you're unsure- you'll find most eager to help. Make note that in many rural areas of the Island your cell phone will not work.

Post a CommentMmm, I'd love to own a home here some day. Or maybe just a vacation rental. :) The coffee festival sounds like a lot of fun.
