Vacation Rentals from Real Owners

Renting a Real Home from Real People

Michele Starkey

If the thought of staying in an expensive hotel seems daunting, try renting a real home from a real person the next time you vacation.

I had a friend who always dreamed of taking the kids to Florida but the cost of a hotel was out of the question. I had forgotten about their experience until recently when a friend mentioned that he and his wife were traveling to Florida and hoped to find a clean and inexpensive place to stay.

Enter: Vacation Rentals by Owner (VRBO)

The site was established in 1995 to fill a need for travelers and homeowners. Since that date, over 19 million travelers per year visit to search for accommodations. The VRBO site claims to have over 150,000 residences to rent in over 100 countries worldwide.

You choose your country, select your region or city and can view online photos of the residence and surrounding amenities available for your travel dates.

If the thought of staying in a $12 million dollar home for one week at $9,900 doesn't fit your pocketbook but you've always wondered what it was like to be a millionaire, you can see it here.

I did some comparisons to my husband's stay in Malaysia. There is a unit for rent here for about $170 per night. It is a condo as compared to the motel that he stayed in for over a week. I believe he would have been more comfortable here and the reviews were 5 stars.

As one reviewer stated on a rental in United States, " Can be decent, but CAVEAT EMPTOR " but most of the reviews were sterling and spoke of clean, reputable and affordable accommodations.

However, if you are looking to get-a-way and watching your wallet, the rentals by owner could be a wonderful experience for you to try.
