Vacation Survival Kit: Survive Vacation Problems in 5 Easy Steps

Heide Lynne Canlas
You've long been looking forward to your vacation for months. You've been planning for this trip for ages. You're mind constantly wanders to thoughts of fun and sun, water and sand, oils and massages. You book the best hotel, plan out the most exciting activities, and shop for everything you'll need. The best part is, all your closest buddies have also taken the time off to go on the vacation with you!

But even your best-planned vacation could go wrong.

The airline loses your luggage. The weather turns out to be bad. You get lost somewhere along the trip. You get sick while on vacation or allergies come up because of something you ate.

While there are certain things you can't avoid or control, there are ways to minimize vacation stress and maximize its fun potential.

First, do not dream up unrealistic expectations. While it is reasonable to look forward to an enjoyable time during a vacation, don't demand that absolutely everything must turn out smoothly, and fret if they don't. If the food is not as good as you expected or you get to share a room with a friend who turns out to be really messy or there's a slight modification in the itinerary, don't fuss over it too much. You have better things to think about than these small hitches.

Second, make sure you have enough cash and stay within your budget. Have enough money to be able to enjoy the activities at the place where you're going. For example, activities like scuba-diving, bunjee jumping, or jet skiing will require payment of equipment rental fees, so anticipate them. If you have limited budget, stay within the range. Pass off on some activities if you have to. While you want to enjoy your vacation to the fullest, you wouldn't want to go home broke.

Third, bring with you a first aid kit, including necessary medicines. You should have in your kit medicines for allergies, dizziness, colds, head and body aches, and upset stomach - the usual vacation sicknesses. This is especially important if you're going to a secluded vacation spot, where the nearest market is a two-hour walk.

Fourth, pack enough water and food. Even if you're headed to a vacation spot with world-class hotels, it won't hurt carrying along food and water, in case you get stranded on the way. Packing enough food is essential if you're staying at an unfamiliar place, where they only serve local food. While, mentally, you may be planning on being adventurous and living off on native cuisine, you're stomach might not be as ready to take the sudden diet change.

Fifth, relax and have fun. Soak in the sights, the people, and the experience. Leave your office worries and work anxieties, and focus on bonding with your vacation pals. Even if you don't get the best roommate or the weather doesn't turn out to be as sunny, you'll surely have a vacation worth remembering.
