Vacation Travel Family Car Rituals

Melina Ann Collison
We have rituals at Christmas and Thanksgiving, why not make some for our vacation travel. Nothing will bring a family closer together than doing strange fun stuff over and over again. Make up car rituals that are personal to your family and all your own. Some rituals will only last for one vacation trip but you will be surprised how many will become a permanent part of your family's history.

Keep a record of your favorite vacation rituals. Create a vacation diary and keep it in the car. This way even if the memories from vacation fade your rituals will continue to live on and on.

When creating car rituals try to be crazier than everyone else. Common rituals include lifting your feet when you go over train tracks or holding your breath when you go under a bridge. Here are some starting ideas for creating your own vacation travel family car rituals.

Creating Travel Rituals

- The only thing you need for this game is a vehicle full of friends and family going on vacation or a road trip that want to make memories.

- Get inspired by something that happened on your vacation. What if you are worried about making it to a rest stop, and when you do your family claps like crazy. You might just want to clap at every rest stop. Maybe you pass a garbage truck on the highway just as you see an airplane in the sky. Your family could hold their nose every time they see an airplane from then on out even if no trash trucks are around.

- Choose a common saying and make it taboo. If someone accidentally says the phrase or words he or she will have to take the consequences. Consequences could include being tickled, having to sing, or people cheering them. Try to pick phrases or words that tie into your trip. For example, if you are on your way to visit family make grandparents be the taboo word. Other great taboo words can include car, hotel, pets, bored, bathroom, food, and "are we there yet?"

- Make memories out of milestones. These will be big moments on your trips and your family can celebrate each one. Try cheering, singing, clapping, getting snacks, or holding hands. Make silly things milestones. When you reach half way to your destination your family could hit a milestone. Other milestones will be seeing a helicopter, crossing a bridge, seeing a rare car, spotting a limousine, or going through a big town.
