Vacation in Williamsburg, VA

Jamestown Too!

Kaitlyn Joseph
Are you considering taking a week off for family vacation before the kids go back to school? Are you looking for somewhere that there is something for everyone in the family? If you live in or around Virginia then Williamsburg may be the option for you.

Jamestown Settlement and Old Jamestown are wonderful for any history buff in the family. Jamestown Settlement has an indoor museum that covers 30,000 square feet. In addition to the museum there is also an Indian village and outdoor settlement that kids can enjoy and learn about. There is so much history surrounding Williamsburg and Jamestown that any history lover could spend well over a week exploring all of it.

So your wife or your daughter are not as much into the history as your are but that is okay because there is plenty of shopping to be done. There is a wonderful outlet mall that has many big name stores including but not limited to: Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, Underarmour, and Ann Taylor.

Maybe you want a little more action. Busch Gardens theme park is only a few minutes away. With roller-coasters like the Loch Ness, the Griffon, and Apollo's Chariot, there is a ride for every thrill seeker. The park itself is set up a little bit like Disney's Epcot. There are different countries to walk through and shop in. All of the rides are tailored to the country that they are found in.

Well, you are on history overload, and your wife has spent all of your money, what is left? The beach! Virginia Beach is only thirty to forty minutes (depending on which hotel you stay at in Williamsburg). There is free parking at the beach (which is good since your money is gone) and there is plenty of sand to go around. If the weather is permitting, some pretty good waves can be found at Virginia Beach. And just in case you have any money left at all, then there is some nice shops along the beach. There are many good hotels along the beach if you are interested in staying the night.

Gas costs are still hurting our wallets, so I understand the need to stay close to home for vacation. My family had a blast in Williamsburg. All of the activities mentioned above were things that my family did and enjoyed. There was something for each of us to enjoy and there was never a dull moment. It is important to get out of the home and bond as a family. Have fun together and discover Williamsburg as a wonderful new (but not actually new) vacation area.
