Vacationing in Historic Inns

Sandra Bacon
Vacationing in historic inns has a special charm that you won't always see in a hotel or motel. There are so many inns to choose from that you can find one almost anywhere you want to vacation.

You have your choice of styles, locations, activities, price and scenery. You can choose from rural with mountains, lakes and forest... to hills and cow pastures, with orchards and gardens.

Below are just a few of the historic inns that offer all of the features listed above. They range from the west coast to the east coast, and the prices range from as low as $99 per night to as high as $2,000 for a week.

Keeper's House Inn and Cottage Rental
Robinson Point Lighthouse Station
PO Box 26
Isle au Haut, Maine 04645

The Keeper's House Inn is located on the remote island of Isle au Haut, Maine. This beautiful inn is a real operating lighthouse that overlooks the Atlantic ocean, and is surrounded by amazing scenery and a forest thick with spruce trees.

The lighthouse was built in 1907 by the U.S. Lighthouse Board, and at one time was actually used to guide boats to a fishing village on the Isle au Haut.

It is now listed with the National Register of Historic Places, but visitors can still visit the restored lighthouse station, which has become a living museum.

Even though the Isle au Haut Lighthouse Station is for sale, for the price of $2,500,000... and operations have been suspended, you can still rent the Woodshed Cottage on a weekly basis. It is located right next to the light keeper's house, and is surrounded by water on three sides.

The Woodshed Cottage has everything you will need to function while you are there. It has an up stairs bedroom with double bed, a small study that can be used as another sleeping area, a private bath, a heating stove, a full kitchen, towels, linen, a music system and bicycles for getting around the island.

The Scofield House is a beautiful house located in a very peaceful residential neighborhood in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. The home was built in 1902 by Herbert C. Scofield, and at that time it was considered to be the grandest house ever built in Sturgeon Bay.

Fortunately for us, in 1987 this beautiful house was restored, and became the most elegant Victorian inn, in Door County. The inn is located so you can walk to all the specialty shops, museums and restaurants.

The decor is a pleasing blend of modern contemporary and Victorian elegance, with floors that are red and white oak, cherry and maple inlaid. It has beveled crystal and stained glass windows, and the door frames and windows are trimmed with flowers, swags, bows and ribbons. Each of the 6 guest rooms have their own private bath, and have been decorated to present an air of romance and intimacy.
