Vacationing for Less: Experience Your City as a Tourist

Due to the rising gas prices, many people have stopped going on or planning for mini vacations. Planning a weekend getaway close to home can be a great alternative to experience the feeling of vacationing. Here are 3 tips to vacation close to home.

Attractions

There may be natural landmarks that you can visit. These places can be in your city or within a short driving distance. These may not be widely advertised. Searching online and visiting your local Visitors Center will help. The Visitors Center or Chamber of Commerce should have a list of many neighboring attractions, landmarks, historical information, as well as maps. Even if you have lived in a city for years, there may be many different places you can explore.

Tours

Taking a tour of your city, or local historical place can give you a different perspective on your city. Knowing the history of a certain company, ethnic group, or business is important. Taking tours is a great way to be around other people if you are tour taking alone. Call local small businesses to see who does participatory tours or classes. There may be a small local pottery house that allows you to paint your own piece of pottery. Many of these are not widely advertised. Local hotels may have small brochures of small businesses that have classes and tours. Colleges and Universities may have low cost sporting events, art galleries, and theater productions.

Fine Dining

Plan to experience different local cuisines. Call and find out when their daily specials begin. Lunch may be the best time for you to try a new cuisine. Dinner prices may be a bit more expensive. Expose your family to many different styles of dining and foods. Call and find out if and when live music is played.

Experiencing your city as a tourist is fun and exciting. It can open can introduce new activities and places to go for fun for your family. Your vacation activities may lead to discovering a new hobby or favorite place to go.

Deciding to find activities to do close to home, can save hundreds of dollars in fuel costs. Knowing what you would like to experience will make your plans clear. Take action and plan a great weekend with friends, family, or even by yourself. Experiencing new things and places is a great way to rejuvenate your mind, to be better prepared for professional and personal life challenges.
