Here is an example of a refusal to vaccinate due to religious reasons:
Religious Vaccine Refusal Statement
Many vaccines contain tissue derived from aborted baby fetuses. My religious beliefs hold that abortions are an abomination. I believe that any product created with the use of aborted fetal tissue is therefore against my religious beliefs.
The First Amendment states that Congress shall make no law prohibiting the free exercise of religion. Furthermore, through Congress, there have been no federal laws requiring vaccination. Therefore, my religious right to refuse vaccination is protected under federal law.
Sincerely,
(Your Name)
Here is an example of a philosophical refusal letter:
To whom it may concern:
I am declining to have (Child's name), given any further vaccinations. I am opposed to further vaccinations due to medical (and/or) personal philosophical concerns. I have included a current copy of (your state's) vaccine policy/legislation which states that I have a right not to vaccinate my children and still have them attend public school.
Sincerely,
(Your Name)
Be sure to check your state's revised code to get the specific information for your state.
Also, be aware that your school administration or nurse may send home a form letter that states that your children can not return to school until after they are caught up on vaccinations. I had this happen to me, even though my home state has the right to refuse for medical, religious, and philosophical reasons. Sometimes the school may be trying to mislead you in hopes that you will get your child vaccinated. Other times they just use a form letter because that is what they have on hand, and they will be very cooperative with your wish to refuse vaccinations for your children. Try to be polite and persuasive, rather than argumentative and abrasive when dealing with school staff. They are doing what they think is best for the community. It is not (necessarily) your job to change minds and policies, but to keep your children healthy and safe.
You may have to sign a form with your pediatrician's office as well, stating that you won't sue your doctor if your child contracts any of the diseases that you refuse vaccination for. While it may seem silly, it is definitely worth signing if you want to remain with your pediatrician and you don't want your children vaccinated.
