Vader vs. Maul: Who Would Win a Lightsaber Duel?
Would Vader Remain Victorious, or Would Maul Mutilate the Dark Lord of the Sith?
Darth Maul is easily the winner when comparing the two in the area of speed. Maul is a trained assassin, hunting Jedi throughout the galaxy. Vader, on the other hand, is a bulkier force. He would be more of a linebacker in a boxing ring versus a lightweight boxer. With his acrobatic prowess, Maul would be able to jump well over the head of Vader, delivering blow after blow from front and back while Vader wheels around in his cumbersome suit. If speed was the only element of a duel, then Darth Maul would be the clear cut winner. However, there are other items to consider.
The next item to consider would be skill. By this, I mean the person who is the most skilled with a light saber. Darth Vader, while very handy with his single blade light saber, apparently does not have the skill to wield a double-bladed light saber. Darth Maul, on the other hand, along with his acrobatic skill, does wield a double-bladed light saber, much like the Florentine knights from the Middle Ages with their two swords, instead of sword and shield. This sort of agility brings a level of danger for those facing him, as Maul is able to swing his blade around, doing damage in an almost 180 degree half circle. So, the edge has been given to Darth Maul in both the areas of speed and skill. Does this mean that Vader is out for the count? Fortunately, for fans of the first trilogy, I believe the answer is a resounding no after you consider the last item.
Power. Now I do not mean by this the strength that either of these duelists have to strike someone. I mean the driving power in the Star Wars universe: the power of the Force. Darth Vader's true strength lies in his control over the Force. Darth Maul, being a member of the Sith, would have some control as well, but historically relies more on his innate talents. As Maul is jumping around, doing mid-air cartwheels, and dancing circles around Vader, he can be flung away like a tiny insect by one use of a Force Push, a talent that utilizes the Force to move objects out of the way. Darth Vader has a straight tap into the power that the Dark Side offers, and it is this power that would easily ensure his victory over Darth Maul.
Although both men are apprentices with great strengths and talents, if Darth Maul and Darth Vader were to fight a light saber duel to the death to determine power, Darth Vader would be the clear winner. By comparing the talents of both men, Vader's deep attachment with the Force, a sign of a true Jedi, would bring his victory over anyone who would dare to challenge him.
