A driver complained to the theater, saying that she aw the title and was upset that her niece had also seen the title.
Bryce Pfanenstiel, of the Atlantic Theater, said "We got a complaint about this play The Vagina Monologues. We decided we would just use child slang for it. That's how we decided on Hoohah Monologues."
Though the theater says they trying not to offend anyone, some are upset over the change. "A child who is old enough to read it on a sign should already know what 'vagina' is, as well as vulva, penis, scrotum, clitoris," some are saying about the sign change.
The Vagina Monologues is an award winning play written by Eve Ensler which premiered at the off-Broadway Westside Theatre in 1996. The play is a series of monologues preformed by women that relate to the vagina, be it through sex, love, rape, menstruation, mutilation, masturbation, birth, orgasm, the variety of names for the vagina, or simply as a physical aspect of the female body. A recurring theme throughout the piece is the vagina as a tool of female empowerment, and the ultimate embodiment of individuality.

Post a CommentThat is ridiculous! A vagina is a vagina and a knee is a knee and a breast is a breast. That is the medical term for the body part so what is the big deal. As a former drama major I am offended by the term "Hoo-Hah Monologues"! Actually I wonder if that is even legal since that is the legal name of the play. I'm not sure they would be ALLOWED to bill it as something else....Hmm....
My kids would be thinking, "How embarassing to call a vagina a 'HooHaa'!"
How ridiculous. Like it's so terrible for a child to know what a vagina is. You know, if a child is abused, to testify, they have to know the proper name for whatever body part was touched...all the more reason to call the vagina what it is, even when talking to a child, and to teach children about their bodies...
god forbid her niece should know what a vagina is.
I don't see this going over very well in another country. Thanks for letting us know.
I get the feeling that the "Hoohaa" thing is a bit of a joke. Of course like most jokes, the people that need to get it, don't. (see Kristina Jones)
Thanks for this article. I can't really believe they would change the name of the play in the advertisements--they shouldn't be allowed to perform the play, in my opinion. I am more offended when the vagina is referred to as a slang name...whether "hoohaa" or other choice four-letter words. It's a vagina, call it a vagina!
Excellent article. I am always stunned at how immature people are. From penis and vagina becoming bad words, to an individuals ability to discuss bodily functions, Americans need to GROW UP. Glad to read you comment and that you are raising your children RIGHT!
I saw this on CNN!! I couldn't believe it...rediculous. I can't believe they would change their sign after ONE complaint. Someone within the building clearly was uncomfortable himself and was itching to change the sign!
That's freaking terrible! Vagina is not an offensive word. Man, the citizens of this country embarrass me. Ignorant cunt? That's a little different. This is possibly the dumbest thing that I have ever heard. Thanks for this. Now I know that the residents of Atlantic Beach Florida are idiots.
