Vaginitis is a very common problem that causes itching, pain and burning. Due to changing hormones vaginitis can come to light during menopause, pregnancy, while taking birth control pills, and chronic medical disorders. Vaginitis can also because from having sex with multiple partners or having frequent sexual encounters.

Let's take a more in-depth look at Vaginitis and all the disorders that fall under it.

Vaginitis is classified under different types such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) which is one of the most common infections in the vaginal area for women in the reproductive age. BV usually carries no symptoms other than a thin gray-white discharge.

Another very common type of vaginitis is the yeast infection. Yeast infections are caused by an abundance of Candida, which causes itching, irritation and soreness along with a white thick discharge that carries a minor odor.

Trichomoniasis is considered a sexually transmitted disease that causes itching, burning and a frothy yellowish-green discharge. Trichomoniaisis is not the end of the world because it can be treated with antibiotics but it is a very noticeable irritation.

Atrophic vaginitis usually is the cause of a drop in estrogen levels. Mostly women who take a birth control that only contains progestin or breastfeeding women will suffer from atrophic vaginitis. While the symptoms give off the impression of an infection with pain, itching and burning there is no infection present. Treatment would include raising estrogen levels such as using estrogen creams.

If you suffer from any of these symptoms is best to see your gynecologist so you can have the correct treatments done and a correct diagnosis. Some of these vaginitis disorders can be made worse from over the counter medications.

Another major to know is that when suffering from any type of vaginal irritation you should not douche. When you douche you rinse away all the normal healthy bacteria that are found in the vagina. When you rinse away these natural bacteria's you are causing the infection to get even worse.
