The Classic Romantic Movies of all time - Valentine day
Bringing up Baby (1938) directed by Howard Hawks
Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, Charlie Ruggles, Barry Fitzgerald
Bringing up Baby is generally regarded by film historians and movie critics as one of the best romantic comedies ever made.
Casablanca (1942), directed by Michael Curtiz
Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains
Casablanca is probably the most romantic movie ever made, but it's also an exciting character driven war story set in a wonderfully exotic milieu.
Casablanca is regarded by most cinema critics and film historians as one of the greatest films ever made. It is also recognized as the exception to virtually every cinematic rule.
Notorious (1946) directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains
Notorious is an unrepentantly romantic movie. It's also one of Hitchcock's darkest thrillers, a visually stunning film that explores erotic, Oedipal, and misogynistic themes without a single cliché.
The African Queen (1951) directed by John Huston
Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn
The African Queen is a classic adventure film and at the same time a definitive "opposites attract" romantic movie.
The Quiet Man (1952) directed by John Ford
John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Victor McLaglen, Barry Fitzgerald, and Ward Bond
In The Quiet Man John Wayne plays Sean Thornton, an Irish-American prizefighter who returns to the small Irish village where his family lived before immigrating to America.
Roman Holiday (1953) directed by William Wyler
Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck, Eddie Albert
Roman Holiday is a enchanting reverse Cinderella tale with Audrey Hepburn as a naïve young Princess who longs to see the world. The rebellious teenaged Princess slips away from her protective entourage to see Rome, but she falls into a drugged sleep soon after her escape. She's rescued by newspaper reporter Gregory Peck who thinks she's drunk and takes her home and puts her to bed (on his couch) to sleep it off.
Peck falls in love with her enthusiasm, beauty, charm, and naive innocence. The bittersweet finale is delightful.
Roman Holiday was Hepburn's first starring role and she won the best actress Oscar for her portrayal of the Princess. The Oscar winning screenplay was actually written by noted anti-war author Dalton Trumbo ("Johnny Got His Gun") but he couldn't accept the award because he was on the Hollywood Blacklist for refusing to testify before Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti Communist witch hunt.
Academy Awards - Best Actress (Audrey Hepburn), Best Costumes (Edith Head), and Best Screenplay (Ian McLellan Hunter), AFI 100 Greatest Romantic Movies #4 .
My favorite Romantic Movie and both Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn are my most favorite actors.
Sabrina (1954) directed by Billy Wilder
Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, William Holden .
Billy Wilder's stylish modern Cinderella story stars Audrey Hepburn as the gawky young chauffeur's daughter who falls head over heels for the youngest son of the wealthy Long Island family that employs her father.
Breakfast at Tiffanys (1961) directed by Blake Edwards Audrey Hepburn, George Peppard, Patricia Neal, Martin Balsam, Buddy Ebsen, Mickey Rooney, and Orangey (the cat) .
Breakfast at Tiffany's (based on a novella by Truman Capote) is a delightful romantic parable about life, compromise, and finding love in the big city. Audrey Hepburn absolutely glows as Holly Golightly, a free spirited, naïve, and slightly neurotic young woman who's afraid of commitment but desperately longs for love.
Robin & Marian (1976) directed by Richard Lester
Sean Connery, Audrey Hepburn, Nicole Williamson, Richard Harris, Ian Holm, Robert Shaw .
Robin & Marian is Richard Lester's romantic account of the last years of Robin Hood. Robin (Connery) and Little John (Nicole Williamson) have just returned to England after twenty years of fighting with King Richard (Richard Harris) in the Crusades.
The Goodbye Girl (1977) directed by Herbert Ross
Richard Dreyfus, Marsha Mason, Quinn Cummings
Neil Simon's The Goodbye Girl is a wickedly funny romantic comedy about love, failed relationships, and taking chances. Richard Dreyfus plays Elliot Garfield, a sarcastic struggling actor and Marsha Mason plays Paula McFadden, a poor down-on-her-luck single mom with horrid taste in men.
Starman (1984) directed by John Carpenter
Jeff Bridges, Karen Allen, Charles Martin Smith, Richard Jaeckel
When fans of think of film director John Carpenter, they usually flash on Halloween (and all the sequels), or Christine violent gore fests filled with screaming victims, demented slashers, and bloodthirsty vampires.
The Last of the Mohicans (1992) directed by Michael Mann
Daniel Day-Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, Russell Means, Eric Schweig, Jhodhi May, Steven Waddington, Wes Studi, and Dennis Banks .

Other best Romantic Movies- Valentine Day Special
Addicted to Love (1997)
Meg Ryan and Matthew Broderick team up to get even with their significant others -- and end up teaming up on a more permanent basis. It's not a must-see, but it is different.
An Affair to Remember (1957)
If you like Meg Ryan's 'Sleepless in Seattle,' you'll love this classic. It's sappy and it'll make your eyes water.
Beauty and the Beast (1934 and 1991)
This movie proves that looks really aren't everything. It's a person's heart and personality that someone falls in love with. Yeah, right! If you're into the singing and dancing tableware, check out the Disney version.
Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)
If you have love and a blue bag or box from Tiffany's, you too can create a romantic proposal with your Audrey Hepburn-look-alike girlfriend!
The Bridges of Madison County (1995)
A man and woman meet and fall in love when the time is not quite right -- she's married with children. A brief love affair turns out to be the story of something wonderful that lasts a lifetime. Romance to the max.
Bull Durham (1988)
Baseball and sex -- America's two favorite pastimes -- meet head-on in this film. Both Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon are very hot in this movie. Costner's speech near the beginning of the flick about what he believes in is still one of the greatest lines in any movie -- guaranteed to make someone in the room melt. Plus, Sarandon's suggestive lingerie is more than enough reason to go to Victoria's Secret for at least part of your honey's Valentine's gift.
City of Angels (1998)
Nick Cage falls from heaven to be with...you guessed it...Meg Ryan. (A tip: if your girlfriend asks you if you think she'd look good with Meg Ryan's hairstyle in this movie, the correct answer is YES!)
Cleopatra (1963)
Ms Elizabeth Taylor in this classic epic of seduction and love. She is truly a LOVE GODDESS )
Dirty Dancing (1987)
A well known chick flick filled with dancing, 80s hair, singing, dancing, watermelons and dancing. Be prepared to shell out for Arthur Miller lessons after this one. And don't forget: 'Nobody puts Baby in the corner.' Yeah.
Emma (1996)
This witty film stars Gwyneth Paltrow as the meddling matchmaker. If you liked 'Clueless,' you'll like 'Emma.' If you hated 'Clueless,' you most likely will love 'Emma'! They both are based on the same novel -- Jane Austen's 'Emma.' This version is, like, WAY more grown-up than 'Clueless.'
The English Patient (1996)
This one is a grand love affair that leads you wasting away in the desert, hoping that your love one will promise to save you from watching the end.
French Kiss (1995)
We admit this MEG RYAN romantic comedy is pretty hokey, but at least she's in it! Kevin Kline's accent is a little unbearable.
Ghost (1990)
Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore at the potter's wheel. Need we say more?
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947)
People who have seen this one say it is one of the most romantic films ever made. A young widow refuses to be afraid of the ghost of the previous owner of her new home. He refuses to leave her alone. She gets used to the idea of him haunting her bedroom as they fall in love.
Gone with the Wind (1939)
A movie that is a must for every southerner or every transplant to the South! This romance that takes place in the Old South. But we must give ample warning: some viewers may become intoxicated to believe in the cry, 'The South will rise again.'
As Good As It Gets (1997)
OK, who can believe that Helen Hunt could fall in love with Jack Nicholson, the jerk? Not us. It's good, nonetheless.
Good Will Hunting (1997)
It's a romantic film in a round-about way -- meaning, it's not the point of the film -- which is a plus for some. Others will really enjoy the romance between Will and Skylar...and may beg the question, 'How 'bout them apples?'
Grosse Point Blank (1997)
It's not easy to mix lots of killing with cuddly time, but it somehow has been done. Think Love Story meets Pulp Fiction. This movie is perfect for the macho man who doesn't want to look like a wimp during Valentine's Day, but does want to increase his chances of kissing an actual girl on the lips.
Harold & Maude (1971)
This movie classic opens with Harold, a melancholy 20-year-old with a taste for the macabre, staging another fake suicide. Then Harold meets Maude, a feisty 79-year-old woman with a zest for life, and falls in love with her. To everyone's horror, he asks her to wed...but Maude has other things in mind.
I.Q. (1994)
Tim Robbins falls in love with Albert Einstein's niece, the ever-popular Meg Ryan, and wants to impress her with the size of his...brain.
The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love (1995)
This is a sweet, true-to-life story about two girls who discover their sexuality while struggling with the outside pressures of a disapproving society. A love story in the purest form.
Jerry Maguire (1996)
MAJOR snuggle time, here. 'You had me at hello.' 'Nuff said.
Joe Versus the Volcano (1990)
As the first in a series of Meg Ryan-Tom Hanks romances, this one ranks last in the romance department. More tears will flow for 'Sleepless' and 'You've Got Mail.'
The Last of the Mohicans (1992)
Going over a cliff to follow one's love. Isn't that an awful lot like something your mom always warned you not to do?
Like Water for Chocolate (1993)
Food is the lead in this aphrodisiac-based flick. If you enjoy the movie, you also should check out the book and use the recipies in it for next year's Valentine's Day dinner.
Love Story (1970)
If you want to score with your woman, this movie will deliver. Make sure you have plenty of hankies.
An Officer and a Gentleman (1982)
Richard Gere and Debra Winger prove that maybe this officer in question doesn't need a gerbil after all.
Oscar and Lucinda (1997)
Ralph Fiennes and Cate Blanchett star in this tragic love story between two people who don't fit in. The movie addresses feelings and how they can break confining customs. Pop this one in the VCR and sit in front of the fire with your arms around your love.
Romeo & Juliet
From the traditional to the Romeo + Juliet of 1996, this classic Shakespearean tale is a romantic success no matter which version you rent.
Roxanne (1987)
Chicks love guys with big...noses.
One Fine Day (1996)
It's the classic story of when woman and man meet, hate each other and then fall in love. This time they threw some little kids in to make it even more cute. If you rent this one for your significant other, the snugglefest will commence.
The Philadelphia Story (1940)
With an all-star cast, this has to be one of the greatest movies. One can be entranced for hours by this classic romantic comedy. If you want to show your sweetie a sophisticated selection from the black-and-white movie era, this one will score you big-time points!
Prelude to a Kiss (1992)
Alec Baldwin and Meg Ryan fall in love in this most unusual movie.
Pretty Woman (1990)
You wouldn't think that Julia Roberts in thigh-high black boots would do much for both men and women, but this movie seems to get everybody in the mood for some good lovin'. It's a nice little flick. And Julia should wear those boots more often.
The Princess Bride (1987)
If your sweetie asks you to rent this one, just say, 'As you wish!' This flick really is an adventure wrapped around romance. There are so many catch-phrases in this one, we can hardly believe it. Anybody want a peanut?
The Tall Guy (1989)
See young American struggling actor Dexter King (Jeff Goldblum)
fall in love with a no-nonsense nurse (Emma Thompson)
while taking abuse from his egotistical boss, a popular comedian played by Rowan Atkinson. Hilarious British comedy written by Richard Curtis, who later wrote Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Top Gun (1986)
Wait! Was Meg Ryan in Top Gun? Yup -- she was Goose's wife. This movie definitely is a hot one. Who can't get excited about that silhouetted kiss by Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis?
Say Anything (1989)
Before Cameron Crowe made his fortune with Jerry McGuire, there was this little film. (Of course, 'Singles' is a pretty good Cameron Crowe movie too, but the chances of 'cuddly-time' aren't as high with that film as they are with this one.)
Chicks may love Meg Ryan movies, but it's our guess they'll love this one also.
Shadowlands (1993)
This is a romantic movie with a big, grey heart. if you enjoy watching British men in tweed and smoking pipes falling in love with flamboyant Jewish, ex-Communist, feminist, American women with children, this is the movie for you. It's the tale of CS Lewis' real-life romance and marriage to Joy Davidson.
Shakespeare in Love (1998)
You wouldn't think that a movie full of people with disgusting hygiene habits would be very sexy. Wrong! Plus, it's quite refreshing to know that having indiscretions in a theater didn't start with Alanis Morissette.
The Shop Around the Corner (1940)
This is the romantic comedy that 'You've Got Mail' is based on. Instead of the Web, the lovers find each other through a post office box. Can you imagine it? The post office!
Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
This perhaps is the most romantic movie made in the 90s. You couldn't dream up a more perfect story about love. Oh, did we mention that it stars Tom Hanks and MEG RYAN?
Titanic (1997)
Your heart will go on and on -- and your nose will run on and on after crying at the end of this one! A fictional story of the historic Titanic cruise, this is a story of pure, true love -- and loss.
Truly, Madly, Deeply (1991)
'Ghost' for the intelligent movie viewer.
Up Close & Personal (1996)
A truly sappy romantic film, this one will could make a stone cry.
A Walk in the Clouds (1995)
Whoa, Dude! A Keanu Reeves movie without a car chase or a skate board? No way! Way. Despite the effort, he still struggles with the non-dude roll. Grab some hankies for your girl and pop it in the VCR. At least you'll get some cuddle time out of this one.
The Way We Were (1973)
Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford are an unlikely couple who fall in love despite their political differences -- but those differences soon tear them apart. This definitely is a four-hanky romantic flick. Nobody can resist the part when he brushes his hair away from his eyes.
The Wedding Banquet (1993)
A gay Taiwanese-American man in a long-term relationship has parents in Taiwan who pressure him to marry. No problem! He finds a Chinese woman who needs a green card. When his parents arrive for the wedding, chaos abounds. This is a sweet story about love and devotion -- with a few laughs thrown in.
The Wedding Singer (1998)
Most people wouldn't think that an Adam Sandler movie would make our list of romantic movies, but this one easily does. It's funny, romantic, and has lots of very cool music from the 80s. Plus, the Marcia Brady look-a-like is hot.
When a Man Loves a Woman (1994)
This sweet Meg Ryan movie is a little different from the others. It's a little less about destiny and more about the devotion a man has for his wife during hard times. A very good movie.
When Harry Met Sally (1989)
A classic Meg Ryan-Billy Crystal film! 'I'll have what she's having.'
You've Got Mail (1998)
The last in the Meg Ryan-Tom Hanks trilogy, this movie just may be a little close to your heart, you Web junkie! It's nice that you took a little time out of your chat room time to visit our little site! Watch this flick with your new cyber lover.

Great choices. Breakfast at Tiffany's is one of my all-time faves, and most people forget Notorious, and The Goodbye Girl is just a classic (such a great movie).
