Valentine's Day is a day most couples look forward to and even single folks, like me, who refuse to be left out, are making plans to have a fun and exciting day. If you're in the NYC area and still don't have any plans for Valentine's Day check out some activities for singles at Event Me. You can choose from a singles anti-Valentine's Day party, a mini Off-Broadway performance with freebies, a cheese and wine tasting or a pajama party mixer.
Although, Valentine's Day has also been a day for engagement proposals, I wouldn't get my hopes up too high. The day has lost the element of surprise and shock value since most people expect to be proposed to on Valentine's Day. Watch out, the question might just be popped on the 15th instead.
So, it's Valentine's Day and except for those who hate and dread what the day signifies, most people irrespective of their relationship status will venture out to have a good time. Valentine's Day is a beautiful celebration of romance adorned with adorably wrapped and delectable chocolate candies as well as vibrant and aromatically fulfilling flowers. And gift-giving always seems to do the trick. So, while you're picking out a present for your loved one take a look at some creative ways to give to others.
The day signifies love and that doesn't necessarily mean it is limited to people you are familiar with. Do something from the heart for someone else. In doing so you run the risk of bringing hope, help or just a much needed smile into somebody else's life. Now that's a risk I am willing to take.
Here a just a few ideas to get you thinking:
Pen, Paper and Cash? - Well, there's nothing wrong with writing a check to a charitable organization. However, you don't always need to give money to help others. You can help organizations with a simple "click." Pay per click is a method in which companies are able to donate funds to a particular cause. I just received an email to give a free mammogram with just a simple click and 100% of the sponsorship money goes to charity. Find a pay per click organization you want to support and get clicking (don't forget to forward it along to your friends as well).
Early spring cleaning - I know we are not exactly over with winter, but spring is literally around the corner. Take time to clear out lightly used clothes (or never worn Christmas gifts), coats and shoes. You'll not only have an excuse to get some new gear but you'll be helping someone else in need at the same time. Canned or dry goods are always in fashion, stop by your local church and donate your food. It will make you feel great just thinking about the family that will get a meal because of your good deed.
Reconnecting - In the age of electronic mail, snail mail is becoming an outdated practice. But, there's something about the art of writing a letter that screams, I care. I am sending out my letter to a family friend who upon meeting me for the first time accepted me into her home and remains one of the nicest women I know. What makes her so great is that I was on vacation while studying abroad in England and with little money in my pocket, she without really knowing me opened up her home and heart. Both, a letter and phone call are long overdue. Buy some green-friendly stationary and write someone who you feel out of touch with a letter. It will make their day knowing that they are still in your thoughts and you'll help out the environment at the same time.
Actions speak - Don't know how to help someone you know deal with a significant change in their life. Nonsense, we all have something to offer in the way of help. It may be that you know someone who has experienced the loss of a loved one. There's plenty you can do rather than say. The grieving process is different for everyone and finding the right words to say to someone may not always be the easiest. Simple gestures like bringing food over or tidying up the place of the griever will be an unspoken but appreciated gesture. Another example, could be offering a date night to friends who have children or are new parents in dire need of a "time out."
Help save a life - Making any sort of medical decision is hard and it is even harder when you choose to donate blood. Just thinking about the needle injection alone can get the faint hearted all worked up. Besides blood donation, one may consider another option. It may be a stretch for most and require a bit more time to consider. But, it's a great way to change someone's life by becoming an organ donor. Besides, today is also National Donor Day's 10th celebration in the United States.
Hopefully, you'll consider doing at least one thing listed here for Valentine's Day. Even if you don't get to do one thing on this list today, just making the commitment to give to someone else is a step in the right direction. Remember the gift of giving is a two-fold winning situation: the receiver wins and you end up feel good about yourself too. Happy Valentine's Day!
