Valentine's Day Activities for Girl Friends

Fierce and Single: Take Control of Valentine's Day and Make Some Memories

Amanda Herron
If you're single this Valentine's Day, don't let the romantic media hype about couples and cupids make you feel like your can't enjoy the holiday. Be fierce and fabulous making memories with your other single girl friends by taking control of Valentine's Day, instead of letting it control you, and your emotions.

Take a belly dancing class

Gather up your single girl friends and get in touch with your inner single goddesses. Take a belly dancing class and learn to isolate your hips and unleash all your sensual energy while learning skills you can really use in your next relationship. Or hit up a hip hop lesson or a strip aerobics session. Just pick something you and your girl friends can have fun doing, make some memories, and learn something new this Valentine's Day.

Give a little back

Plan a few hours at a local non-profit organization, like walking dogs at the Humane Society, reading to children at the Boys and Girls Club, or entertaining residents at your local nursing home. Check to see if any local churches or clubs have a service project planned for Valentine's Day weekend. What better holiday to give back to your community than Valentine's Day - a holiday to celebrate love and friendship? Afterwards, you and your single friends can go for cocktails or hit up a movie.

Get Fit and Fabulous

Valentine's Day falls after months of winter and simple carbs have everyone feeling blah and flabby. Use Valentine's Day with your single girl friends to kick off a fitness routine and get those endorphins racing. Plan a boot camp for all-day or an afternoon. You can hire a personal trainer from a local gym to set up specific activities or plan your own.

Choose exercises that will be fun and different from your normal workout routine. Start with a mile run/walk to warm up, do some Tae-Bo or kickboxing cardio, then add a session of yoga, Pilates and/or body ball strength training. Try to incorporate some activities that will help you look forward to spring, like renting time at a local in-door pool or taking a brisk hike if the weather allows. Plan plenty of breaks and stay hydrated.

Play ball!

With all those couples flooding the local restaurants, wineries and jewelry stores, the softball and soccer fields will be wide open. Throw together a Valentine's Day softball game or soccer championship. You can even get pink and red t-shirts decorated with two "team" names and numbers. Call up some of your old high school or college teammates and post fliers at work. Chances are you'll have some of the couples asking to join in on the single fun.

Have a baking party

If you and your single girl friends are a little more "domesticated," decide who has the biggest kitchen and gather everyone together. Choose some interesting new baking recipes and a great bottle of wine. Play a classic love story movie in the background or put on some jazzy tunes. Everyone can hang out, making sweet Valentine's Day treats, and just enjoying each other's company. This could be a Valentine's Day activity in conjunction with a little community love if you take some of your baked goods to the nursing home, homeless shelter or soup kitchen.
