Valentines Day Craft; Easy Wood Carving Valentine Heart

Save Money This Valentines Day with This Homemade Valentines Day Craft

David Farrell
The easy Valentines Day wood carving craft is a unique Valentines Day craft you can make at home. Here is how to make this easy wood carving craft. The simple Valentines Day wood carving craft probably can be done in less than an hour plus time to let the paint dry. If you are including engraving, the craft may take longer. To make this craft, one needs to be old enough to handle a knife.

For this Valentines Day craft, you will need:

Flat piece of wood

Pencil

Carving knife

Coping saw or other saw

File or sandpaper

Paint or varnish

Valentine wood carving craft step #1: Drawing the shape of the valentine:

Using the pencil, draw an outline of the Valentines Day heart on the wood. Using pencil to draw allows you to erase and correct your outlines should the outlines need to be adjusted. Double-check your outlines. Now you are ready to cut out the valentine craft.

Valentine wood carving craft step #2: Cutting the valentine out of the wood:

You can use the coping saw to cut around the entire outline of the valentine craft, as the outlines are easy to follow. If you don't have a coping saw, you can still cut around the wide, flat parts of the outline and then carve out the corners with a wood carving knife.

Valentine wood carving craft step #3: Fine-tuning the wood carving:

Add the finishing carving touches to the valentine wood carving. With the wood carving knife, remove any remaining material that the coping saw missed. Round and smooth out the rough edges with the knife.

Valentine wood carving craft step #4: Add engravings: (optional.)

Using your pencil, trace the desired letters upon the wooden valentine carving, erasing and adjusting as necessary. Using the point of the knife, carve out the letters. The carved message should be kept very brief to allow for larger letters. You may want to carve out a letter on a spare block of wood before you start carving on the valentine. That way, you can be sure you want to follow through with the work before you actually start and its too late to quit.

Valentine wood carving craft step #5: Sanding the wood carving:

Sand the wood carving to eliminate any splinters while adding the finishing smoothness to the wood carving. If you are using a file, file any rough edges out. Sandpaper is probably better than a file unless you need to remove some material the knife missed.

Valentine wood carving craft step #6: Paint the valentine craft:

Red, pink, and white are the usual colors, but if your recipient likes a different color, be free to paint the valentine craft that color. If there is engraving, paint that a contrasting color with a fine paintbrush, or color in with permanent marker after the paint is dry. Between painting both sides of the valentine wood carving and painting the engraved letters, it may take a few days to finish the painting.

You now have a unique Valentines Day gift for the person you love or appreciate, which you were able to obtain without breaking the bank.
