If your kids are looking for a fun Valentine's Day craft, they will love making this homemade tic tac toe game. It's a Valentine's Day craft that turns into a Valentine's Day game!

Before you begin this craft, click here to see an image to give you an idea of how the game board is made. You can elaborate any way you want to make it your very own design.

Start by making the tic tac toe game board. Since it's for Valentine's Day, you will want the game board to be heart shaped. For a small game board, you can use red construction paper or red card stock. For a large, floor sized game, you can use a large red poster board. Cut out a heart shape, then using a ruler or yard stick, draw the tic tac toe lines. If you want to be super crafty, you can glue the lines on using strips of construction paper. You could also use yarn, twine, ribbon or anything you have on hand to make the lines. You could even use electrical tape!

As for the game markers, it's a good idea to use heart shaped pieces. You will need 10 hearts total, 5 each of two different colors. You can just cut heart shapes and leave them flat. Or, you can make puffy hearts as seen in this image. To make puffy hearts, you can sew or glue two hearts together and fill them with a small bit of poly-fil, a cotton ball, scraps of paper, or whatever you have on hand to use as filling.

If you decide to sew the hearts, you can use a sewing machine, or you can sew by hand. Sewing by hand it a good activity for kids. You can use a dull point yarn needle and teach your kids a simple running stitch or whipstitch. Just remember to leave a space to stuff the little heart pillow, then sew or glue closed.

For a large, floor sized Valentine's Day tic tac toe game, you can fill hearts with rice, popcorn, or dry beans. Then you can play bean toss tic tac toe! If you do make a large, floor version, you might want the lines of the tic tac toe grid to be raised so when a bean bag is tossed, it won't slide off the game board. You can use slats of wood to create a raised game board (just glue them on the board). Or, you could glue empty plastic containers, such as margarine tubs, to the board. The tubs will catch the bean bags. If you do use tubs, be sure to decorate those too!
