Valentine's Day Crafts and Activities for Kids

Drew Bush
I remember the good old days when I was in elementary school and I was able to make all kinds of arts and crafts for the holidays. I had the chance to make some wonderful crafts for Christmas, Halloween and Valentines. In all honesty, I can almost remember it like it was yesterday. In this article, I will give my personal experience with making Valentine's Day crafts that are great for kids.

Valentine's Day Cookie Necklace

A great craft for kids to make is a Valentine's Day cookie necklace for mom, grandma, or any other person special to a child. Now the question is how can we make a cookie that will not fall apart? It is really simple. This is a simple yet cute little project that kids will enjoy. I created a Christmas ornament using this idea when I was in second grade.

Items Needed:

Red or pink paint

Glitter

Elmer's Glue or any other white glue

An 18 inch long piece of string or any old necklace chain

Apple Sauce (It binds with the glue to make a nice firm mixture)

Red or pink dye

Small heart-shaped cookie cutters

Directions:

Mix white glue, glitter, pink or red paint, and apple sauce together. It will turn out to be a firm yet doughy mixture.

Roll out the dough until it is about ¼ to ½ inch thick (it can be a little thicker if you'd like).

Obtain a heart shaped cookie cutter and create several heart shapes in the dough.

Poke a small hole in the top of the heart shape so that you can put a chain or piece of string through.

Take the heart shapes and put them on parchment paper on top of cookie sheets. Let them air dry for about a day in a dry and room temperature atmosphere.

After the cookies are dry, take an old chain or piece of string and slide it through the hole in the top of the cookie.

Give the necklaces to family members and friends so they can always treasure them!

Shiny Valentine's Day Mural for Display on a Refrigerator

This is another simple yet creative way for kids to show someone that they care.

Items Needed:

Aluminum foil

Any magnet, preferably a large one

Different colored paints

Glitter

Plastic Wrap

Stickers

Piece of Cardboard cut into a 6-inch diameter circle

Directions:

Obtain a magnet (preferably a larger one). They can be purchased from many craft stores.

Obtain cardboard and cut out a 6-inch diameter circle. It would probably be smart to draw and measure it first.

Obtain some aluminum foil and encase the cardboard in the foil.

Now is the time for the kids to become creative. They can create all kinds of little things on the hand made mural. They can paint hearts or anything else appropriate for Valentine's Day. They can even apply Valentine's Day stickers. Is there a photo that your child wants to put on the mural? Also, kids can apply glitter to the mural if they like. To do this, just apply some glue paste and sprinkle some glitter on. The glitter and the aluminum foil combined will create a bright and shiny picture.

Obtain some plastic wrap and encase the foil wrapped circle in the wrap.

Put some glue on the magnet and stick it to the back of the circle. Let it dry for a few minutes.

Put up the beautiful decoration on the fridge for everyone to see.

Heart-Shaped Book of Memories

Items:

Construction paper of varying colors

Photographs

Glue

Colored pencils or crayons (for decorating)

Plastic Wrap

String

Directions:

Cut out a large heart from a piece of colored construction paper (at least large enough to put a 4X6inch photo on). Use this cut out heart to trace other hearts on other pieces of construction paper.

Search through all of your pictures and pick ones that you think your child would like. If you have more than one copy of the same picture, you can use those.

Let your child paste the pictures onto the hearts.

Put all of the hearts together and poke 3 holes into the side of the hearts. Use string or any kind of special clips that you can put through the holes and tie the hearts together.

Enjoy the book of memories for years to come!
