For this project, you will need (per wreath):
- One twelve inch or larger Styrofoam heart wreath mold (available at craft supply stores)
- Metal bottle caps (such as those from soda bottles or beer bottles)
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Banner Red or Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Ballet Slipper Pink
- Several yards of pink or red cotton fabric
- Ruler
- Fabric marking pen
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Two inch wide or larger satin ribbon in pink or red
- Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth
To begin this Valentine's Day craft project, cover your work area with several sheets of old newspaper and/or a large drop cloth. Lay out each of the metal bottle caps so that the outside or print side is facing upward. Prime each of the bottle caps with an even layer of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. (You should no longer be able to see any writing or design on the metal.)
Once the primer has dried completely, paint the bottle caps using either Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Banner Red or Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Ballet Slipper Pink. Apply three or more coats, making sure absolutely no writing shows through from the bottle cap itself. Dry completely.
Lay out several yards of pink or red cotton fabric. Use a ruler and a fabric marking pen to create one inch strips on the fabric. Cut out these strips using scissors. Apply a dab of hot glue to one end of the fabric strip. Secure to the Styrofoam heart wreath mold and begin to wrap the fabric around the mold. Apply a dab of glue every couple inches to secure the fabric in place. Continue wrapping around the wreath frame until the entire heart shape is covered in fabric.
Apply a dab of glue to the underside of one bottle cap. Adhere the bottle cap to the fabric on the heart mold. Repeat this process until the entire wreath mold is covered in pink or red painted bottle caps. Cut a piece of two inch wide or larger satin ribbon. Glue the ribbon to the top of the wreath in a loop for hanging. Once the glue has cooled fully, hang the Valentine's Day themed wreath as desired.
