Valentine's Day Crafts: Red Heart Purse for Girls
Your Little Girl Will Love This Valentine's Day Purse
To make a red heart purse, you will need two sheets of red craft foam. You can also use red craft felt, but the purse won't hold it's shape as well. You can also use red construction paper or red card stock if you are in a pinch. Paper purses won't last as long, but they are great to make and give away as party favors.
Start by cutting two hearts the same size. Then using a yarn needle and red yarn or cord, whipstitch all around the edges of the hearts, leaving the top open. You can get a general idea of how this looks by viewing this image. If you are making a paper purse or a foam purse, it's a good idea to use a paper punch to make holes around the purse, then whipstitch. You do not need to punch holes if you are using felt.
Once you have the two sides of the purse sewn together, you need to make a purse handle. You can cut strips of felt or foam and stitch them together to make the length of strap that you want, then stitch the ends to the purse. You can also use yarn to make the strap. One nice way to make a yarn strap is to make a long braid from the yarn, then sew the ends of the braid to the purse. For a paper purse, a yarn or cord strap works well.
You can decorate the purse any way you like. One idea is to make a little heart pocket on each side of the purse. You can cut pink hearts out of foam or felt and just glue them on each side, making sure you only glue down the very edge of the heart. Leave the top open so you can tuck something in the heart, like a stick of gum or a folded up dollar bill.
You can also decorate the purse many other ways. You can glue on heart shaped craft gemstones, pretty buttons, or shiny beads. You can add ribbons and bows. For paper purses, you can decorate using stickers. You are only limited by your imagination!
This is a great craft for a parent to give as a gift to their little girl, but it's also a great craft for the kids to make. You can let them make their own purses then have them hang their empty purse on their bedroom doorknob. Then you can fill the purse with treats during the night and your little girl will be delighted to see what gifts she got in the morning!
