Valentine's Day Dinner the Cheap Way!

B. Dean
For millions of Americans every year February holds one very important day. This day at times has even put people into debt. But this doesn't have to be the case. If people would make some more cost effective choices they would have more to smile about throughout the remainder of the year. I'm not talking about the day most of us start the tax preparation process (although this can hold some worries of its own), I'm talking about Valentine's Day and all of those seemingly little expenses that go along with it!

Everyone knows that one of the most important aspects of a good Valentine's Day is the romantic meal. For many this puts horror into the hearts of those with a tight wallet. The meal does not have to cost an exorbitant amount that will need to be financed for the next four months! There are many ways that you can set a dinner budget and still impress the person of your dreams. If you have a date with an open mind, why not try a crafty, yet romantic, alternative to the fanciest establishment in town? For instance, make dinner for that special someone. It really is not that difficult to throw some steaks on the grill. One can even order prepared meals from a local deli or grocery store if they are not a top chef. Just keep in mind what your special someone would like to eat. In this instance, ambiance can be set at home instead of in a crowded restaurant. Candles and flowers will help set the mood well, as well as some romantic, meaningful music of their choice. After all, a restaurant's choice in music does not have to be foisted upon you!

If you still feel like you need to go out on the town, look around for places that offer dinner specials. Call around for the best deals for the evening. Make sure you get a reservation if one is required. See if they'll allow you to drop off flowers beforehand as a surprise, or if the restaurant will provide flowers or romantic candles for the table free of charge, or if you are allowed to provide your own candles. If they don't provide candles, look around to where candles can be purchased cheaply in the area, such as discount or dollar stores.

Check on restaurants in more outlying areas of town (the suspense of driving to your destination may increase the romantic factor!) that may have lower prices and just as great of food! The point is to create ambiance on your own for a lower price. Again, check beforehand for the possibilities of creating your own personalized romantic scene.

In the end your Valentine's Day meal does not have to be a financial burden that just carries over and capitalizes repeatedly throughout the subsequent years. If you set up your less-expensive dinner correctly, then your date will most likely be concentrating more on you and the table where you sit as opposed to the fact that they are not in the hottest spot in town!
