Valentine's Day: Famous Sports Couples to Break Up

Lauren Romano

Cupid has not always been particularly kind to some celeb couples. It's no surprise that relationships are especially rough for those in the entertainment and sports industries. They're always in the public eye, often face temptation, have crazy schedules, hear daily rumors about their partner, and are constantly being criticized all while trying to maintain a balanced home life and career.

There were several famous sports couples who were together for years before it was announced that the relationship went kaput.

Frank and Jamie McCourt

Their names might not seem familiar right off the bat, but their divorce was very public and ugly, and with a whopping $20.6 million in legal bills, was reported to be one of the most expensive divorces in California's history.

The couple married in 1979 and have owned the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2004. Divorce papers were filed in 2009, but things didn't go smoothly and there were issues pertaining to the team. Frank said he had sole ownership of the team, Jamie said she owned half; the judge ruled in 2010 that they were co-owners thanks to California's "Community Property Law". In a crueler twist of fate, the judge also ruled the pair would have to settle the dispute outside of divorce court. It was reported in 2011 that a settlement was reached where Jamie would give up her stake in the team and receive about $130 million.

Michael Jordan and Juanita Vanoy

He's undoubtedly one of the most famous and recognizable basketball players in the history of the sport, so when the couple announced their divorce, it made headlines everywhere. It seemed like the perfect marriage filled with romance, but in 2002 Juanita filed divorce papers claiming irreconcilable differences. Juanita withdrew the papers shortly after, but they both decided in December 2006 to end their marriage. She reportedly got about $168 million in the settlement. The former couple has three kids together. Michael has since moved on to model Yvette Prieto, who he became engaged to in December 2011.

Tony Parker and Eva Longoria

The San Antonio Spurs guard and the vivacious actress started dating in 2005, got engaged in 2006, and married in 2007. After what seemed like a storybook romance, she filed for divorce in 2010 after reportedly finding hundreds of texts on his phone from another woman. The actress also stated he had cheated on her during their marriage.

Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren

The world-renowned golf legend and the Swedish former model married in 2004, but the relationship ended in a crash in 2009 after he smashed his Escalade into a tree outside of his Florida home. Days before the crash, rumors were circulating about his cheating. After the accident many of the dirty deeds were made public and it nearly took a spreadsheet to keep up with all the scandals. At the end of it all, there were allegedly 10+ women he was involved with. The couple divorced in 2010, and she reportedly got $100 million in the settlement. In 2012, she made headlines for buying a $12 million mansion only to demolish the entire thing.

Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries

What list of famous sports couples that broke up would be complete without mentioning the couple many can't stand to hear about anymore? After a televised wedding in August 2011, the reality star filed for divorce from her New Jersey Nets hubby on Oct. 31, 2011. She wasn't planning on an annulment, but he filed papers on Dec. 1, stating that the annulment is based on claims of fraud. Viewers watched some of the marriage unravel on the "Kourtney and Kim Take New York" show. There's now talk that, due to California's court laws, the divorce proceedings might be televised. Bring on the popcorn.
