Take a Winery Trip: There's a winery up the road you see every time you go town. Each time you tell your lover, "We should stop by there sometime." Now's that time. Take a day together and spend it at the winery. Taste something new, buy a cute wine bottle stopper, share a snack, and then take home a bottle of something you've never tried before. Once home, share that bottle and let the night lead you where it may. What better way to spend Valentine's Day than with the one you love the most.
Go Antiquing: You know that writing desk your wife has been talking about buying? Or the childhood train set you've longed to own again? Most cities have an antique store or two, but why not use Valentine's Day to take a day trip and visit all the antique shops, yard sales, flea markets, roadside used furniture stores around your home town. Set a timeframe or mileage limit (ex. within 100 miles or 2 hours) for the day and just go. Leave early, take a picnic lunch and see where the day will take you. You'll spend time with the one you love, and may even come home with a treasure to mark another successful day of love together.
Visit a Bed & Breakfast: This year, let someone else make the bed and cook you breakfast. There are thousands upon thousands of bed and breakfast and country inn locations across the United States. With a simple online search you'll most likely be surprised at just how many bed and breakfast locations are in business around your home. When you visit a bed and breakfast you can go somewhere you've never been before or stay close to home this Valentine's Day.
Cheesy Hearts: While all Valentine's Day plans should be fun, this one is especially giggle-worthy for the 'Old Married Couple'. Splurge on a hotel room with a cheesy heart-shaped hot tub! And yes, there really are hotels out there who still have the heart-shaped tubs available. Bring a bottle of wine (from the winery trip), pour in some bubble bath, and spend the evening laughing, talking about that new desk you're going to be refinishing when you get home, and reveling in the glowing love of being married to your best friend for all these days.
It doesn't matter how old you are, how long you've been together, or neither of you have any interest in flowers or chocolates. Valentine's Day is meant to celebrate love. Do something you've never done before. Go somewhere you've only talked about. Or simply go up the street to the local hotel and spend the night in your lover's arms. Valentine's Day is a day for all who are happily in love; not just for the young and fresh relationships. Kiss the one you're with, no matter how long that's been. Happy Valentine's Day to you!
