Valentine's Day: Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Garner, Ashton Kutcher to Star

Have All Other Movies Been Put on Hold so All These Stars Can Star in One Film?

Valentine's Day may still be months away, but New Line Cinema and Warner Brothers are hoping a line-up of A-list stars will make you spend the holiday - and your cash - in a movie theater, according to a press release from Warner Brothers.

The aptly named Valentine's Day is scheduled for a release around the romantic holiday, and the cast could be called the First Team All Americans of romantic comedy: Julia Roberts, Adam Kucher, Jessica Beal, Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Garner, Patrick Dempsey and Bradley Cooper, according to Warner Brothers. MTV reports country singer Taylor Swift also has a small role in the movie. The music channel's info comes from someone on the set who reports Swift's character is involved in a kiss.

And, if all those names and talent aren't enough to rake in the money, add the director: Gary Marshall. Marshall directed classics Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride, along with the latest Princess Diaries segments.

Valentine's day has never been a blockbuster holiday for the movie industry and rarely are releases timed to coincide with specific dates other than Christmas and summer. New Line Cinema and Warner Brothers are gambling big that they can turn Feb. 14 into a new movie marker.

Valentine's Day will mark the first time Roberts appears on camera with her real-life niece, Emma Roberts. The younger Roberts (age 18) is the daughter of actor Eric Roberts. She recently appeared in the family film, Hotel for Dogs. (She had an uncredited cameo in another Roberts film, "America's Sweethearts.")

The story line is basically about couples who are involved, or want to be involved, with others and the strange and funny events that follow as some seek out the "other" woman or man. Roberts is a central character connecting the couples. In the short teaser briefs and information out there, the movie could be called a romantic Crash, the critically acclaimed movie that followed how the lives of everyday citizens in Los Angeles interacted during day.

While the names will no doubt draw lots of attention, having so much talent could actually hurt the film. The movie could come across as a gimmick instead of a funny comedy worth two hours of the public's time. So many large egos on one movie set could also cause some ego battles big enough to slow production. (Who's going to tell Anne Hathaway she has the tiny dressing room?)

Warner Brothers is known for its strategic and successful marketing plan. With Valentine's Day, every bit of that marketing talent will be needed.

  • 1. Valentine's day will star both Julia Roberts and her niece, Emma, of "Hotel for Dogs" fame.
  • 2. Taylor Swift's role may be minor, but it's big enough to have a good kissing scene.
  • 3. Gary Marshall is directing the film.
By releasing such a big-budget film on a minor holiday, Warner Brothers is trying to create a film holiday outside of Christmas and summer.

I like movies with big ensemble casts, like Love Anyhow (was that the name of it?) with Hugh Grant et al.

Even if you don't have your own Valentine, this movie is a good way to spend the holiday. Maybe even good for a few laughs.. Good story.
