Valentine's Day Love Story - Meeting John on the Yahoo! Contributor Network

An Unexpected Love

Karen Bishop
You never know where you'll find the one person who sweeps you off your feet, tosses your life upside down and makes you wish that forever could last well, forever. I found the one who did all that and more in another writer on the Yahoo! Contributor Network. John came into my life and nothing has been the same since.

It's all in the timing, and the timing wasn't right when I first saw John a couple of months after joining the site in 2009. I figured even if I did get the nerve to talk to him, he wouldn't notice me. I'd just be one among many faces.

That all changed during a chat on Facebook with a group of fellow Yahoo! writers just before Halloween last year. I saw him and my heart gave a little bump, right before the butterflies settled in my stomach. It was near midnight, the witching hour, when the first words were exchanged between us. Ironically enough, the topic of conversation was about magic.

We started having too much fun doing what we writers do best, playing with words. The conversation of my fellow writers fell away and John was all I saw. It didn't take long before conversation began to fly fast and furious between us. Right from the start I'd felt like I'd known him forever.

I never really knew what it meant to "fall head over heels in love" with someone, but now I do. I didn't know at first that he was any different than anyone else. I had read his articles, but not his bio. I didn't know, but soon found out, we had more in common than the same snarky sense of humor, the same taste in music and the love of knowing stuff just for the sake of knowing it.

We have in common progressive disorders that don't keep us from living life to the best of our abilities. I have Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, he has a neuromuscular disorder called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. We share a somewhat darker side of life, knowing time is precious. John can always make me smile and laugh even when I feel like I'll never smile again on my worst day.

Being a writer for the Yahoo! Contributor Network brought John into my life. He has become not only the man I'm in love with, but my best friend and soulmate. Just ask our fellow Yahoo! writers who we keep entertained over on Facebook with wall posts and music videos full of love and laughter.

I am so very very sorry for your loss. John was a gifted, intelligent guy. We had a falling out, but I still loved him and prayed for him. He introduced me to AC.
