Math Games Using Valentine's Day Conversation Hearts

There are many ways that you can incorporate math concepts into your elementary school lesson plans using Valentine's Day conversation hearts candies. Here I will list a few.

1. Estimation: Give each student a box of Valentine's Day conversation hearts. Have them estimate how many candies are in the box. Let them empty the coversation hearts from the boxes and count them. How close were they to their estimation?

2. Sets: Have your students separate the Valentine's Day conversation hearts by color. How many do they have of each color? How many Valentine's Day conversation hearts do they have of similar phrases?

3. Fractions: Have your students count of the number of total candies in their boxes of Valentine's Day conversation hearts. Say there are 20. Have your students count out the number of pink conversation hearts. What fraction does that make? For a student with 5 pink hearts, it would be 5/20. Can that be broken down even further?
