Valentines Day: A Scheduled Day of Romance

Jason Cooley
Holidays are special days, not because of whatever historic or biblical message they are based on, but because of the atmosphere they bring. Valentines Day is a perfect example of exactly what I'm talking about. I mean think about it, when else will you get to see images of a Toga clad baby pointing a sharp projectile at people...

I do like the decorations and the special candies, and the sentiment is nice as well, but the pressure to be romantic on a specific day that everyone gets creates a stress-filled expectation as well as a drag on the message. Because of this expectation, people have to pay more money for items wrapped in special packaging and a woman has to feel pressured that her date needs to out do all her friends' dates so she doesn't lose any status points.

When the entire country is doing the same thing you are forced to either dutifully follow along or be the outcast. What if you are having a bad day, or if you start your period? You either have to trudge forward or spend the day alone feeling like a turd.

With the world's population continuously growing, Valentines Day could become a global risk. Remember the notion that if all the people in China were to jump at the same time, the earth would be knocked out of orbit? Well, what if all the people in America got it on at the same time, would this cause our planet to be knocked out of control proving all the prudes right that our overactive sexual ways would be the undoing of us all?

I can't write this in the third person... I just can't. To do so would make me feel like a douche big enough to accommodate Madonna. My articles are a change of pace from what you can expect anywhere else. M...  View profile
