If you have decided you want to get married in Nevada on Valentines Day you must realized this is not going to be a new idea. Everyone thinks it's the easy and fast way to go with all the fun and excitement that comes with it. But lets take a close look at some of the pitfalls of poor planning so you can make a rational decision on this very important day.
Always and I do mean always make reservations in advance. Hotel and casino's fill up early and without reservations you are going to be driving around town looking for a room that won't include gun shots from next door and drug dealer making the sales. If you don't make reservations then you need to have a cell phone with you. Most hotels will not take walk-in's until late in the night and only if they have rooms not yet sold. If you are lucky enough to get one of these rooms at 11:00 pm it is going to cost you a small fortune. If you have your cell phone then start calling every hotel and motel you can to make a quick reservation. Remember you are going to be competing with hundreds of others doing the same thing.
Be sure to have a credit card with you and your identification. It doesn't matter how much cash you have in your wallet, you will still need the credit card to get a room of any kind. If you are under 21 years of age then forget it. Hotels with casino's do not rent to anyone under the age of 21 years old. You will have to settle for one further from the main strip without a casino and these are hard to find on short notice. The person who rents the room and is responsible must be 21 years of age or older.
If you are under 21 years old or have children you can not stand in the casino area and just watch. You may walk through on your way to a destination, but you are not allowed to stop. Children or anyone under 21 years of age are NOT allowed to sit at a slot machine. Not even for a few minutes. This includes toddlers or anyone holding a baby. The casino's are tough about this policy because it is the law and they can be fined right along with you. So be understanding and keep moving. No children on the casino floor not even to watch.
If you arrive late afternoon, be prepared to stand in long lines to register for your room. Do not complain because you had reservations! So does every single person in the line and you all decided it would be fun to get married on Valentines Day in Nevada. Be patient, be friendly and do not respond to anyone else complaining about the line.
This is very important so read carefully and completely. Arrive early enough to get your marriage license. You have to go to the county clerks office in which ever city you choose in Nevada to obtain it. They usually close by 5:00pm, but for this holiday they will sometimes stay open a little later. This is the only place you can get the marriage license and you must have it to get married in the state of Nevada!
When you apply for the marriage license you must have a picture identification with you and the cash to pay for the license. You must be at least 18 years of age, if you are under 18 years of age you must have a parent with you to sign authorization. If you are divorced then you must know the exact date of the divorce. You can not get a license without this information.
Next you will have to secure a chapel or decide how you want to get married. While it's true there are more than enough chapels it is also true there are many others getting married had reservations for these very same chapels! If you didn't make a reservation for a chapel then you are going to stand around in wedding attire until they have a few minutes in between reservations to perform the ceremony. It will be quick so be kind when you are rushed out for the next couple.
Plan how you are going to get to the chapel. Your choice is drive your self, take a taxi, make a limo reservation or walk. Many of the chapels are close enough to walk to along with many other brides and grooms. If you decide you must drive just remember parking is going to be at a premium and there will likely be a charge. If you are going to take a taxi you may have to wait awhile for one to become available.
If you are going to walk you better take into consideration the weather. Las Vegas may be warm, but Reno is likely to have snow, rain or high wind during this time of year.
Your ceremony is going to cost money so don't expect it to be free, a small tip or even cheap. Chapel's provide a service in a beautiful setting with nothing for you to do except show up and say I do. They will provide pictures, camera's, video, album, flowers and even rings and wedding attire rental, but it all cost money. You can have a very simple ceremony just for two without the trimming for as low as $75.00 in some places and outlandish or traditional ceremonies without a dollar limit.
Once the ceremony is over and it's time to relax, eat and have a good time you will have to have dinner reservations or eat at a small diner. At the small diner you may be waiting in line for an hour before there is room to serve you. Plan you first dinner together and plan for enough time to get to it. Better yet order room service and enjoy the honeymoon until your fabulous meal arrives.
After all that you are ready to relieve a little stress with some fun on the casino floor. Gamble a little, drink a little and have a good time. But wait! Gamble only the cash set aside for that purpose. Do not draw from your checking account, do not use the credit card for gambling and do NOT take from your savings account to make up for any loses you have. Casino's are in the business of making money from gambling and they are quite aware of how to draw you in to think just one more dollar will be the big hit. Most of the time it isn't. If you do hit that $500.00 jackpot then good for you! But did it cost you $700.00 to win it? It's not worth your savings or your new marriage.
Keep a positive mood and remember this is a town that provides fantasies. If your new husband seems to be looking at a scantily clad cocktails waitress then don't get upset. They are everywhere. It's hard for him not to look and it's hard for you not to look. Just enjoy the show and hope it pays off for you that night when the honeymoon takes place. Too many people get upset and divorced before the weekend is over because of jealousy. Don't let it get to you and if you think it's going to be a problem then don't go to Nevada to get married!
On Valentines Day you will have the best show in the world to watch. There will be brides everywhere. Tall brides, fat brides, old brides, child brides, mad and sad brides, crazy brides, happy brides, crying brides, fighting brides and a lot of run away brides making a last minute change. There will be families upset because the groom never showed up or the bride is locked in her room with the best man. There will be grooms arrested for being drunk or getting caught with a hooker. There will be grooms refusing to leave the jail because the bride knows about the hooker and has some very harsh plans for him.
There will be lots of brides dressed in beautiful white dresses screaming obscenities and grooms too scared to talk. There will be grooms passed out in the hall and brides fainting at the alter. There will be lots of couple that have had too much to drink and are going to hate their wedding photo's showing the truth of their condition for years to come. There will be a lot of couples getting divorced with hours of getting married. But there will be a lot of couples that return home to years of happiness together and lots of good memories of their Valentines Day Wedding in Nevada.
It's all in the planning, the positive outlook and knowing what really happens in large gambling towns on Valentines Day when everyone wants to get married. It can be the experience of your life, but it's up to you if it's good or bad. Happy Valentines Day and good luck to all who take that step in Nevada.
